The most accurate group I ever fired in my .243Win. was with the Sierra 70 HPBT and WW748 38.1grs. It shot .459" (5 at 100yds). But, the rifle never shot another good group with WW748 or WW760. That's been my experience with Winchester powders. I get the odd super group and a whole lot of mediocrity. I switched to IMR4064 and have been much happier. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

One other thing about Varget that I love is temperature insensitivity. I froze a batch of .308 rounds to -20F and heated another to 105F and shot both over a chronograph. Average difference was 8 fps.

i have used varget in .243 before i had it rebarrels to .260 and i continue to use it exclusively in the 260 it will shoot .5's to boredom.
my shooting buddy had been using 760 in his 308 for years and he tried the varget and shaved a tenth of inch off his groups and they were more consistent and the barrel cleans up quicker and that is my 2 cents.

Lapua case, fed210Match primmers,neck sized,
85grn sierras 10 thou off lands
87grn Vmax 5 thou off lands,
they both shoot 1.5" high @100yds dead on @200yds,
both typs of bullets 3 shot groups all touching, @100yds but not all the time but think that just me lol,

I'm looking for accurate reloads in my target .243, currently shooting 70,75 and 85 grain bullets. I have tried Varget with one load, talking at the range another shooter said "ww 760 is ok, but I got alot of carbon fouling working with it, Varget seems much cleaner..." Any 760 users/defenders?? I've got a new 1 lb. can to play with.......41

I have played with Varget more than 760. I only use ball powders when I don't care about their temperature sensitivity (like .223 Rem rounds).

I load Varget in my .220 Swift, .308 Win, and .300 SAUM. Love the stuff.

So... it looks like its true ww760 has some issues, and that Varget is amazing stuff! I'll try out the 760 loads next time I'm out to the range anyway. I've also loaded some 75 gr. V-max's over H-380, another ball powder to try out. Probley wind up with 10 lbs. of Varget when its all said and done. Vargets temp. insenstiveity is something else eh??......41

You're talking apples and oranges a bit there, 41.

Varget is somewhat faster than WW760 (which is itself a clone of H-414), being more in the range of WW748, or perhaps somewhere between the two.

Varget will likely do very well with your 70 and 75 grain bullets, while a powder the speed of WW760 is likely more suitable for 85's and up. This is not to say that Varget won't give you passable velocities with the heavier bullets nor that WW760 won't do the same with the lighter bullets.

Remember, all rifles are a rule unto themselves, and yours may not perform the way most do. Only you can make that determination by careful experimentation and observation.

By the way, I haven't used a lot of 760/414, but neither temperature sensitivity nor dirtiness has been a problem.

41, Load up some .243's using 41.0 grains of VARGET and the 70 grain Nosler BT's(70 grain Speer TNT's also work well) use Federal Match 210's and seat them from 15/1000's off to just touching the lands.......if your .243 won't shoot this load.......it will be the first I've ever heard of! Not maximum velocity but accurate and deadly on varmints! As far a ww760 goes, I've used it quite a bit in 22-250......40.0 grains behind a 52 grain Speer Gold Match(not made since 1977 or so) and they were hell on wheels on varmints!! But VARGET wasn't available back then! It would be hard to find a more versitile powder than VARGET in the "varmint class" of rifles up to the short magnums!! I don't even consider 1# cans of VARGET anymore!!!! Just get the 8#.......2 at a time! I have acceptable loads using VARGET in 223, 222MAG, 22-250, 243, 6mm, 243AI, 25-06, 260, 300SAUM(no need to look for another powder for this one!!!) And have even tested it in the 7mmMag with decent results! A more versatile powder, I have never run across! And I thought that IMR 3031 would hold that distinction for a long time!!!....It did! Until VARGET appeared!! GHD

I didn't know ww760 was that much slower than Varget. So it should work ok with my 85gr. Sierra GKHP's, and if I want to try out the 105 gr. A-max it should be a good choice...41

41, Nosler lists 42.0 grains of VARGET as max with the 70 grain BT and also lists that load as their "most accurrate load tested". I found 41.0 to be the most accurrate in several different 243's. Hornady lists 40.5 grains of Varget as max behind a 70 grain Hornady HP.....go figure. I guess Iwould have shot the Nosler BT if it had been pink tipped for testing! GHD

GHD, you know I'd get some of those Nosler 70 gr. BT's but I can't take those purple tips!! I was loading 38.5 grs. of Varget under the 75 gr. V-max and that was real close to the book max. load.....?? 41.0 grs. & a 70 grainer isn't close to max...how's that??
