Went to my deer lease for the first time in about four months. I've gone on a hunt each of the last three months with Bob Connell and the guys from the Texas Predator Posse and haven't been to my lease since April. Went up to fill up feeders and do a little hog huntin'/varmint calling and "get outta Dodge".
Friday at 6:30 pm when I left camp to do a little varmint calling it was 104 degrees F in the shade, according to my digital thermometer. Conseqently I donned my "old white guy camo" which consists of a pair of camo crocs, camo shorts and a brown dew rag. Started calling about 7:15 pm. The first fox came in about three minutes into the sequence. He was on the run. He passed up the call and when he realized what he had done he did a 180 like he was on a rubber band and came back and stopped about 5 ft. past it. Nailed him at 40 yds. with 221 fireball and 50 gr. nosler ballistic tips. I continued calling and about two minutes later another fox was coming down the road. He busted me and went into the brush. I changed the call from a jackrabbit distress to a screaming jack. About 5 minutes later he stuck his head out straight across and about 20 yds from the caller. I nailed him. I then swithched to a grey fox distress and a third came close and started barking. Couldn't see him for about 5 minutes due to high brush and cactus. Finally picked him out with binoculars. Nailed him straight on between the eyes at 50 yds. However as I had on crocs and shorts I did not recover him due to the cactus and briars. Here are the two that I recovered.

Went out later that night with my son and we called in 5 more fox. Between the fox and the light show produced by the heat lightning it was a fine night.

Love the outfit!! You must have bathed in bug spray. The last time I was down at the ranch in Junction the gnats were aweful.

Will you keep the pelts and if so how are they for this time of year? Also, what caller are you using?

Regards,
Scott

Vanderhoef,
Bugs don't much care for the way I taste so I don't use bug spray. For when they do I use a thermocell. As to the pelts, they are better in the winter and spring. The ones that aren't too torn up I give to a taxidermist friend of mine. I use a foxpro fx3 most of the time. I like being able to set the call out about thirty yards away from me. The critters lock in on the call and/or decoy and never see me.

john113wyo,
What can I say, gotta keep the dogs cool also!!

Can't say as I blame the bugs for their taste preferences Wink

Actually they don't usually seem to care for me either, with the exception of the aforementioned gnats which I found to be unusually fond of me. The Thermacell is a fantastic device, although mine did experience mechanical failure on my last trip, which had me in fits.

Anyway, I assumed the pelts would be thin this time of year but was wondering if you were on to something that I was missing, as I've only fox hunted here in the winter months. As to the Foxpro, I picked up a new Fury this year and can certainly attest to their effectiveness on the grey critters.

Regards,
Scott
