Hornet is great! How about low velocity?

Finally, Ive been shooting my new Anschutz 1730D HB! Pure joy with sub .730 groups at 100 yds using factory ammo! Why did I wait so long???

Anyhoo, I now have sufficient brass to start reloading and will work up some loads based on the info obtained via this forum.

My?: Has anyone worked up a low velocity load for the .22 Hornet that works consistently. Im thinking 1000 fps (sub-sonic)pushing a 45 gr. bullet. I know reduce loads, with some powders, can cause chamber ringing due to detonation. Also, I understand there are ignition problems with other powders that dont fill the case sufficiently to promote complete firing.

Any thoughts, suggestions from those whove been there and done that ..

Best,

Will

I had no luck with anything under 1200 fps, probably because my barrel is 26". Jacketed bullets would not clear the barrel at lower velocities. Used Bullseye, somewhere around 2-2.5 gr. Accuracy was terrific though, sound about like a .22 lr. After considerable thought [Roll Eyes] I decided to stick with my .22lr for squirrels/cats/whatever. You might have better luck w/ cast bullets.

1.5-2.0gr. Red Dot, pistol primers, and RCBS 55gr. flatpoint cast bullet works great in my TC, at 22LR velocities. Might not work well in an Anschutz, the twist is 1:16 compared to my 1:12. Might try the little Lyman 40gr. cast bullet in that one. BTW, the hornet makes a GREAT cast bullet gun with even full power loads.

For years I used 7.3 grains of IMR 4227 for an estimated velocity of 1850. Today I shoot 4.1 grains of UNIQUE to get the same estimated 1850. I use either a 55gr or 45 grain bullet.

I've cast bullets in the past for .308 and .50 cal. The idea of casting for the .22 Hornet is certinally within the zone of interest.

Thanks for the input and I'll give the loads a try.

Best,

Will
