hi i am using 55g Nosler ballistic tips in my 22-250 and was wondering what you would deem the max effective range of this combo to be on crows? is it capable of consistent 500yd performance?was shooting at the range sat and once i had the wind sorteed was making pretty regular hits on a 4''x4'' target!basically what i want to know is will it kill cleanly and reliably at this range? thanks for your help

Yes it will if you connect with a solid hit. At 500 yards a 50 grain pill should be tooling along at about 1800 fps and retain about 275 ft lbs of energy. Plenty for crows and such. I have killed many out to about 350 yards with my 22-250 and the hits were still very impressive.
My experience is about like crowrifle's, it'll kill them fine as far as you can lay one on 'em. I think about the toughest varmint shot out there is a crow walking around in tall grass. I would suggest that a 2" x 2" square is a bit more life sized to judge your capability, crows look big but they're mostly a lot of feathers.

Crows are very easy to kill but hard to hit. If you hit one it will not do much but fall down. If it stays alive so much the better as then more crows will stay around. Shoot them too.
Bunny - Killing them isn't the issue. Hitting them is the problem and this gets increasingly difficult with .22/250 beyond 300/350 yds unless you are shooting in perfect conditions and know your rifle EXTREMELY well.
Don't kid yourself that just because the .22/250 works like a lightening bolt within 300 yds that it is without limitations. As that little light bullet runs out of speed, it will start running out of performance FAST as well.
The good news is very few crows are actually shot at beyond this range in the real world.

It only requires 60 Ft. lbs of striking energy to inflict a mortal wound. The 22-250 will deliver a mortal wound to any crow at 1000 yards should your bullet strike it's body.

More like 6ft lbs!

If I can hit a crow past 250 yards from a field position, I have done very well. I shoot 22-250s and Swifts and you boys that are hitting them at 500 yards sure have some good typewriters.

Will a 22-250 kill at 500 yards and beyond? Oh Hell yes. Is anyone capable of making 500 yard shots on such a diminutive target consistantly? Oh Hell no. Jim

No crows here in Iceland but I shoot seagulls at 200-250 meters with my Sako AII heavy barrel 22-250, I agree with Wilson Drew you guys that are hitting them at 500 yards have some damn good typewriters.
Good day, I had a neat expereience two years ago with my .17. I'm guessing it was about 250yds. I shot a crow with a 25gr Hornady bullet and the crow got up and flew off about 50yds, stood there a second and fell over dead. If the fields would not have been so muddy(nice gumbo) I would have gone to see wheer I hit it, I'm always wondering where that bullet struck. Mike

The author never said he was hitting crows at this distance. He wanted to know if he connected that the 22-250 would do the job. IF I saw a crow at 500 yds I would try, hell its only powder and what good is a rifle if you arent USING it? Now if it was say a 270 500 yards and an elk, different story. With a crow you are either going to kill or miss at that range.
