i came across a remington 40x. it is in 222remington with about a 22" inch heavy stainless barrel. a bench type stock with very wide forend. it has a remington 24x scope (i think they were made my unertl or lyman) and unertl type rings and bases. the gun is in great condition. how much is the gun worth? how much is the scope worth? and how much would both together be worth?

Mainer1234: Double check the barrel length. If it is a factory 40XB-BR Model it only had two barrel options 20" and 24". If it is 22" then it probably has been rebarreled or rechambered. Check and see if it has or doen't have a safety. If there is no safety lever then it has the somewhat more valuable 2 ounce target trigger. The single shot version of the 40X carries more resale value than the repeater model. If it is a 20" factory barrel with no safety and like you said in great condition then I would pay about $800.00 for just the Rifle. Those scopes I am a little less familiar with. I know they performed well at the bench though as I have seen them shoot. Only rarely are they seen for sale but when I have seen them the asking price was strong (high), I do recall that.
Check the condition of the throat on that Rifle carefully and if it appears the rifling is crisp I would make an offer on it. I have owned a lot of Remington 40X's and they were all quite accuate and problem free Rifles! I do presently own a wood stocked Remington 40XB-BR in caliber 222 Remington it has the 20" very heavy barrel and is the single shot with 2 ounce trigger. I have a Leupold 24X scope on it. I have shot lots of Colony Varmints with it and it has shot some VERY small groups! In fact this is the Rifle I hand to my children and friends when they get to bragging how well they can shoot. If they do well with this Rifle then I know there mouths are not to far ahead of themselves! With Varmint bullets this Rifle has shot many groups in the .180" range. Its average grouping on a calm day at 100 yards again with Varmint bullets is around .280" to .320" for 5 shots. I am more than happy with this Rifle!
Good luck if you decide to try the 40X!
