Bought a new Savage 10FP short action, heavy barrel today. Noticed that the plastic stock has a lot of movement in the forearm.I have another Savage and it is not that way. Any one had any problems with that. I can even push it over to the barrel and since I shoot coyotes off of a bi-pod wondering if that would cause a problem. I have not shot it yet and can take it back. Sure like the feel of the accu Trigger though.

I noticed the same thing on my Savage 116. I opened up the barrel channel a little with a round file to keep it from contacting the barrel, and bedded the action. It still moves some, but doesn't seem to affect the accuracy of my rifle. I can shoot one half to one inch groups regularly with my rifle from a bipod.

That's one thing on the 10FP that needs fixing. I heard of people going to the junk yard and getting a V-8 push rod (ford 302) and JB welding it into the groove you'll find under the barrel in the forearm of the stock. It doesn't add much weight since the rod is hollow. They say it's a pretty good fix.

I just replaced the stock on mine.

Thanks gentelman for your imput. I broke the rifle in today and after the break in rounds fired 5 rds. for affect. Under a 1 inch group and I think will do better but the sun was setting and I was having trouble seeing the target. Good reason to go back this weekend and shoot more ammo. Thanks again.

That movement in the stock will effect you. I have a mod700adl synthetic in .223. With various handloads shoots regulalry .25 - .50 groups. Its a shooter. But, from the bipod I had misses and it would flex. I noticed the cheap stock moving easily. I replaced with an HS Presicion stock - kevalr, aluminum bedding block - stiff. I now will shoot great from the bipod at 200yds or more.
Those synthetic stocks from the company are ok, unless you use a bipod

I have the same rifle, and the weak forend bothered me too. I bedded the action, then put two 1/8 x 1/2 strips of aluminum(work in a machine shop that specializes in aircraft work, these were trimmings from alumn. extrusions.) under the barrel and on either side. Glassed them in as well. It really helped the movement. Recently got a harris 25s bipod, and tested it for the first time today. The POI was the same with the bipod as without it, though I had the bipod on the rear swivel stud. Tried it on my M77 MII 22-250 sporter, and the POI was 2 inches to the left and about 1/2" down from where it normally shoots. Looks like the Ruger will need a bit more "float" to the forend. The Savage will get me by though as long as it shoots it's normal 1/2" groups Steve

I just visited the Savage website a short while ago and noticed a new design for their laminated stock on
the BV12 and BV112. They've removed that ugly forend tip and rounded the stock quite a bit. It
actually looks like quite an improvement. I guess they won't be able to call Savage the "ugly rifle"
anymore. It looks pretty much like the Remington VLS which I don't think anyone has called ugly.
Best wishes.

I was recently at the Savage website and noticed the stock has been changed on the 12BVSS and the
112BVSS. It looks much slimmer and they got rid of that hideous forend piece. The stock actually looks
quite graceful now. Maybe they'll stop calling Savage the "ugly" rifle now since it looks so much like the
Remington VLS which noone calls ugly. Best wishes.

I got one this summer,I don't hunt anything with it ,just target shoot with it.Had the same problem when I placed it in a rest the barrel would drop down in the foreend,so I took a steel washer and placed it between the foreward screw and then it started to shoot tiny groups.I had planned to get it bedded and the forearm stiffened but haven't gotten around to it yet.
One thing about it the warmer the barrel gets the better it groups, anyone else find this in theirs?
The Bell and carlson stock did it fit without any trouble?

kscoyote,
I bought the same rifle when they first came out in 98 (except for the accu-trigger). Had the same problem with the stock. I bedded from the barrel nut down to the tip with accuglass gel. seemed to help. It was a tack driver with 40gr.BlitzKings and AA2230 powder.

I have an older model, before the short action 10 came out. It is the 110, with synthetic stock and heavy 20-inch barrel, called a "4x4". It shot great (half-inch or less, when I was in the groove) but I replacd the stock anyway with a stiffer Bell & Carlson stock from Cabela's for about $89. It shoots just as well as before, but I feel more confident. I do almost all of my shooting from a bipod. A buddy has the longer-barreled 10FP and his shoots fine from a bipod, too. His might do better with a stiffer stock, though.
