MACHIAS, Maine (AP) —A Maine turkey hunter got an unusual response from his turkey calls and decoy on opening day — he was bitten by a coyote.

Bill Robinson of Edmunds Township was hiding in the brush in Machias early Monday morning using a mouth call and decoy when he attracted a coyote rather than a turkey.

He says the coyote came around a thick spruce tree, lunged and bit him on the upper arm.

He says the animal quickly sprinted away once it realized it had bitten a human and not a turkey.

The Bangor Daily News (http://bit.ly/ITRRpi) reports that Robinson is undergoing a two-week regimen of rabies vaccine shots as a precaution but he does not believe the coyote was rabid.

I've had coyotes and bobcats come in to my turkey call. Never had one bite me though.

That's crazy.....but not hard to believe, I had one check out my decoy just the other morning. The dilemma I always have is whether to ruin my intended hunt to shoot one....and I always opt not to.

You just do not know what may appear when you go calling.

I had an owl take of my hat one evening in Wyoming when calling for coyotes. Scared the heck out of me. When he realized I was not a rabbit he just flew around squawking and dive bombing me.

My dad was in Alaska and tried calling in wolves with a hurt rabbit call. Much to his surprise what he called in was a huge brown bear. He put that call in his pocket and never took it out again.

I had a coyote come to within 10yds of me while turkey calling a few years ago on a spring hunt. There's no spring season here for coyote but the 12g was on his chest just the same.Had he come at me he'd have gotten a healthy dose of 4 shot for breakfast. No way I'm going to let anything bite me if I can help it.

Sounds like I've been going about calling coyote the wrong way! Perhaps i should put up a decoy and use the turkey call! I'm not being silly, it sounds like it may be a different unused way to get em in close. Always open to others way of success!!

We were out crow calling one day my buddy was sitting with is leg out in a deer path. A yote came barreling into the crow all and slamed into my buddys legs.

They both were surprized.

Very interesting.....very interesting indeed!
This story sounds very similar to one which mentioned over in the thread about coyotes v/s cats and dogs. In fact, the two stories are so similar that I am beginning to wonder about the authenticity of these reports.
Anyone interested can hop over to the other thread and read all about it, including where they can go tomsee pictures of one such victim. But basically, it seems to have happened pretty much as has been reported here.
While it is possible that both these stories are true and all, I just can't help but to wonder....

Supposing everything is Kosher with these reports, it would seem that we are seeing the coyote becoming much more aggressive and dangerous right before our eyes.....

JB1,

The article I posted was from AP. I will give them the benefit of the doubt. I am sure Associated Press did not fabricate the story or run it without verifying their sources. I posted it because it is the first instance I know of where a coyote attacked someone while they were using a game call. I have had coyotes literally run over my outstretched legs while calling and know of cases where a bobcat has pounced on a caller. I think you are looking a little too hard for some kind of conspiracy.

To sum it up, predator hunting is not rocket science. Don't over think it.

my friend has a nice scar on his face from a bobcat. He was wearing a rabbit fur hat and calling in the early morning hours. He didn't see the cat sneak up on him and when they came face to face the cat gave him a whack and took off running.

My friend has been hit TWICE by Bobcats while calling Turkey! First time hit him from behind, hard, scratched his face and actually bruised his ribs.

Don't know the details of the second attack, but it wasn't as bad.

We do have quite a few Bobcats in the area. He showed me how to properly trap Bobcat. I was impressed with the meticulous process he goes through.

It works though.
