I think John Jackoviak has hit the nail on the head - we have all had problems with most brands - but what is obvious is what is missing - Elite's and the European scopes. OK there aren't too many euro varmint scopes around, and they are REALLY expensive - especially in my part of the world. ( Im thinking Swaravski/IOR/Kahles/etc....) Honestly, Ill stick to Leo VX3's, until I win the lotto, which I will probably buy from the US via the web, until the local agents can get their act sorted out. Just for your info - some idiot has started importing "Leapers" scopes into NZ, and thinks that 3 times US list retail will keep him in business! Ive seen some rubbish in my life......

I do not like simmons scopes I think there over priced rubbish. I have learnt my lesson with scopes it is now at least leupold for me, I have not been able to afford a Euro scope yet but one day I will try one. Leupold represent good value for money and they are at the point value where once you spend more your entering into the "diminshing returns" syndrome IMHO.

This is easy......Simmons! Absolute worst scope I ever owned. It was a fixed 2x shotgun model. I thought it would hold up to the recoil of a 12 gauge slug.........it didn't. I replaced it wih a 2-7x Leupold and have not had problems since. [ 11-05-2003, 06:04: Message edited by: Iron Buck ]

Weaver V-9 that thing would change pt of impact 11" at 200 yds from, 3-9, in a 5 oclock direction. It was not the rifle for sure as I used this in a local competition bench rest club.

Worst scopes - 6-24 Tasco now used as fishing sinker; 6x bushnell on my .22 - would never hold zero; 6x bushmaster on old .22 mag - recticle shifted and eventually shat itself. Best (an by definition are still on my rifles) - 3-9 Leuopold VX11 on my .308 - very clear and nevers loses zero; 3-9 Hakko Superb on my .223 - flawlessly clear and shoots like a demon. Adrian

The late great Gale Mcmillian http://www.google.com/groups?q=asia+group:rec.guns+author:gale&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=4dtsl0%24anc%40xring.cs.umd.edu&rnum=4 told me that all lenses are made with the same computer program to grind them, from the cheapest scope to the most expenstive. What you pay for is coatings and mechanical reliability. He built scopes a sold them to the US military and went to Asia many times to visit the scope factories. His advice to me was to buy Leupold and if I could not afford that, to buy B&L. He died a couple years ago, but I have been buying used Leupolds and I am very happy.

ALIGNE THE RINGS? You mean you have to align the rings? sonofagun One Of Us Member # 8312 posted 09-26-2003 01:39 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And how many of you can say these "bad" scopes were mounted properly with correctly ALIGNED RINGS? -------------------- http://members.aol.com/intwg/flamewars.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posts: 540 | From: mid-michigun | Registered: May 2002 | IP: Logged

My thoughts , I had a Cabelas Pine Ridge break on me right at the base of the threads for the top elavation adjustment cap . Cabelas did send me another scope , no hastles , great service equals repeat buisness. I hav'nt mounted the replacement yet. I have a Simmons 3x9 pro hunter on that rifle now , but it lacks eye relief . I did have a Bushnell Sportsview go south on me , but it came with the rifle 20 years ago. May be I'm lucky but I havent found any I really hate. Currently I look through Bushnell Banner 6x18, BSA 6x24 Mil Dot , Simmons 3x9 Pro Hunter , Simmons 3x9 Deerfield , Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x14 and a Weaver 3x9 Marksman . To whomever reads this good luck with whatever you buy .

I purchased a Tasco 6-24x50 Varmint Scope 12 months ago and fitted it to my 6.5x55 Swede and it worked perfectly. Since then I have fitted it to my Ruger M77 22.250 Target rifle and have had no problems shooting .5 MOA. I just guess you have to be lucky some times. All this for $200 Australian.

Danbro: Yes I think you should align the rings when you are about to mount your scope. Not only do I align the rings with each other I align them with the bore! I also bore sight the rings! Then after I bore sight the rings with a properly centered (adjustments centered) scope I lap the rings and check the rings again for proper bore sighting. Then I lock the scope down with the upper ring halves and bore sight again. I started this regimen about 8+ years ago using alignment tools from Kokopelli, a long carpenters square and lapping tools from Russ Haydons Shooters Supply. I am now going to make a statement that I can not prove but in my heart I know it is correct! The proper mounting procedures and extreme care I use in mounting my scopes really pays off! My detailed loading log book shows that since I have been using my own hard learned procedures for base, ring and scope alignment and mounting my load development (finding an accurate load) has been made much simpler and faster. And problems with shifting point of impact has virtually been eliminated in my properly scoped and mounted Rifles! The only complicating factor in my recent experience/observations of my new found ease of obtaining and maintaining accuracy is that at about this same time (8+ years ago) I began using the excellent Sinclair bullet seating gauge! This splendid and inexpensive tool! I am sure helps eliminate time and barrel wasting "guestimating" of bullet seating depth that I did for decades previously while doing load development. Anyway for the last 8+ years I have found load development to be easy as pie for me! And scope problems have virtually disappeared. I highly recommend using the utmost care in mounting and aligning your bases, rings and scopes. The extra time spent doing so will save time, money, barrel life and hair pulling down the line! Simmons Atec. Good glass, poor eye relief, and terrible POS adjustment. Yes, it is aligned and mounted correctly.
