sscoyote27, or 28 cal. bullet performance on coyotes
Does anyone out there have any experience with sniping coyotes to 1000 yds. or so? I'm preparing to build a long-range rifle that I can use pursuing coyotes in a spot and stalk scenario. I've already acquired the optics for the project, i.e. 6-24X Burris with Ballistic Mil-Dot reticle, and Leica 1200 yard rangefinder. I'm leaning toward a 7 RUM, or .270-7 RUM. I want the velocity and B.C., but I'm only 130 lbs., and I don't want to go too big as I don't want the gun to kick me off the mesa I may be shooting from.

todbartellThere are way more high BC VLD bullets for a 7mm, 270 has very little. Just gives you more choices in bullet selection.
I have no clue about 1000 yard coyotes, I doubt I could hit one past 275 yards!

DigitalDanI'd go with the 7mm, probably not the RUM, as I don't think you need that power. Any 7mm case that can give 3000 fps +/- will do it. 280 AI? Ballistic Tips or VMAX bullets will provide proper terminal performance at the lower impact speed typical of long range shots. Better bullet selection for the 7mm caliber. Same for the .30's as well. The .308 is adequate for 1000 yard shooting BTW. First member of the 2000 yd club at
www.varminthunter.org used a .308 for a prairie dog. Another place to look is

m7007mm Rem mag Sendero w/handloaded 160 grain SPBT Sierra @ 3100 fps - outstanding long range coyote performance! I think lighter bullets would be even better, but I was working up a deer load. Coyotes just provided excellent target practice!
Of course you don't need anywhere near this much gun for 'yote hunting. Regards, Guy
