Has anyone tried the 17 HMR 20 grain Hornady XTP's for accuracy and/or for lethality on Varmints?
These bullets appear to be just a standard hollowpoint shape with a pretty large hollowpoint opening.
To tell the truth I could not be happier with the 17 gr. V-Max type bullets that I have been using so successfully now for more than two years now. The 17 gr. V-Max's are wonderfully accurate and AMAZINGLY lethal on all manner of Varmints from Ground Squirrels on up to Coyotes - in my experiences anyway.
I bought a box of 50 of these Hornady 20 gr. XTP's and will give them a try tomorrow morning at my range.
I was just wondering if anyone has tried them at the range or in the field and how they compare to the 17 grainers in your guns.

There are a bunch of penetration tests posted at RFC, the Hornady XTP and CCI Gamepoints are controlled expansion loads that form neat little mushrooms instead of fragmenting like the Vmax and to a lesser degree, the TNT/Speer HP. On game performance has been good, accuracy is just like any other .17hmr round, some guns shoot em good, some don't. Varmint Al has a bunch of penetration results posted at his site, too.

VG, I've tested them on paper in several different 17's and my results have been that "they have potential" but I have yet to find a firearm that they have the accurracy form group to group like the 17 grain VMAXS. I have not put one thru a varmint yet!!! My Savage Striker 17HMR sems to like them well enough to do the "meat test" but have not done it yet!! As long as the Hornady 17 grain and the Remington 17 grain loadings keep performing as they do in the Marlin 17VS, Savage 93, Remington 597, T/C Contender rifle barrel, .....no need to test them any further!! And I do have half a brick of the Hornady version left to try!! GHD
