Hey Guys,
Does anyone use these stocks? or have used them, what are they like?

Me and a few other guys I know want to build a 338 Lapua Mag just for kicks Big Grinand these stocks have been suggested/talked about.
Any suggestions on stocks of any sort for this type of "animal" would be great.

We will be using a "Barnard" action" and more than likely a "Trueflight" barrel.

Thanks

Runas

It's been a couple years since I've seen one but the last 2 that friends bought were terrible.

I have done a batch of Boyd's and have done several from Richards.. I have one on order now in fact, for a Savage...

I respect SWD's opinions, so this is not aimed at conflicting with his...

Boyd's a little better with their CNC stocks...

if you want different laminate colors than the plain old grey or nutmegs.. then, Richards is a better way to go..Boyd's wait times can be forever on different stock color options..

If you want a heavy stock, such as a benchrest stock since you are going with a Lapua, then Richards again is going to be a choice...

Richards may require more fitting than Boyds also.. but I don't find this too difficult with Handchisles, a drimmel.. and patience..

Patience is the key.. there is a big difference in the needs of a gunsmith to turn out a product for a customer, and we the home hobbyist..

So I see SWD's opinions varying from mine, as perspective.. he is a gunsmith.. me, I can take my time...

My current stock from Richards is requiring a lot of work... but it is what I wanted as opposed to what Boyds offered...

it isn't a varmint rifle.. it is a stock for a 31 inch bull barrel on a Mauser action...but it will be used as a varmint rifle.. but weighing about 20 pounds, it won't be a portable rifle, that is for sure...

If you get one, and it drops right in.. thank you luck..if it takes a little fitting work.. don't be shocked...

for the money, overall, I think Boyd's and Richards both offer the hobbyist and rifle enthusiast some very cost effective options!

cheers

Thanks for the input,

Because of the type of action we are planing on using, we may in fact use a "Mastin" stock, they sure dont have the colour choice but they have the advantage that that Barnard action will just bolt straight in.

The Mastin are alot more pricey but the "woodwork" is nil, and the have a good reputation here in NZ with the bench rest shooters.

Have a look at some Kiwi engineering

www.barnard.co.nz

If anyone out there has any info on optimum barrel length, profiles etc for a 338 Lapua
I would appreciate any input.

BTW we are building 3 of these beasts! none of us want to feel under gunned!!

Seafire, the last two Richards stocks that I saw were way over inletted. I don't mind taking wood out, but when a semi inlet already has huge gaps it's tough to grow it back to make it look nice. I've been practicing but my wood welding skills just hav'nt come very far at all....

SWD,

Was that in the barrel channel or around the action?

So far the two that I have had, I asked for larger barrel channels....

If over inletted around the action.. now that would be a problem...

I would have returned those, I have to admit...

I have one coming for a Savage 116 in September or so.... knock on wood ( no pun intended lol) that the action area will not be oversized...

I like the different color of laminate options that they offer...

cheers

This is a no-brainer, RUNAS-

There is probably no better combination than the Barnard in a Mastin with a True-Flite barrel.

The Mastin will have the Vee block, thus no bedding.

A drop-in.

And the True-Flites are superlative.

Thanks to those who replyed, I know the Varmiting Forum may not be the perfect place to post for this rifle but, I know that all of us are into super accurate rigs and that is what this project rifle is goin to be.

They are not going to be BR rifles, the idea is to have a long range killer for feild use on bigger game, as much as I like shooting Varmits at long range, I really enjoy shooting bigger stuff like goats at longer ranges.

Thanks again for the input, If anyone has got more suggestions for this project Im open for any comments or suggestions, any info welcomed

Runas, i posted a similar question on here a few months ago and also on rimfirecentral.com and general feedback was inlessting is rough and not so accurate and that 99% finished is a bit optimistic.

No doubt you will be glass bedding and freefloating a heavy barrel, that will take care of the inletting.

I have seen some real nice pics of finished Richards stocks so end result should be great. I am going to put one on a .17 HM2 rimfire.

Did you see the article in NZ Guns and Hunting where Greg Duley used a 7mm/404 on a Barnard action to take a Sika at just over 1,000 yards? Instant kill!

Seafire, both were very large in the action area. They said send the first one back no problem and second was even worse, even though they knew what the complaint was. Arg! This was a few years ago so hopefully they have had time to make new patterns or train employees to do a better job.

Kiwi Vince,

No I havent seen that article, Ive kinda stopped buying magazines, but I would be interested in having a look at that one, if you could give me a date for it thumb

As for the Stock, 99% sure we will be using a Mastin, nice n easy that way.
