you should be able to see 20 cal holes in the target at 100 through you riflescope or binos. if you're looking at a cheap spotter be aware that things are going to be awfully fuzzy. take a peek at the low priced nikons
Put yorself a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 on the rifle and forget about the need for a spotting scope!! Step it up to the Monarch 6.5-20 Nikon,(old model not made anymore)and forget the need for a spotting scope at 100 yards!! Any quality glass should not require a spotter at 100 yards be it a 17 or 20 or 22 caliber hole in the paper!! The NIKONS have it hands down for quality, affordability and clarity!!! GHD

I have a Leupold Vari X III 2.5X8 on it. Guess it's time to get a varmet scope...
Brett
Hey Brett, I just bought the same scope that Goundhog Devastation is talking about with the BDC reticle. For what it's worth, I like it better than my VX-II on another rifle.

I have not read a bad review of the Konus spotting scopes. Go to Optics Planet and look at the reviews, do a search on the net and check also. The only bitch is there heavy. 1/3 the price of a "good" spotting scope.

I picked up a Simmons 20-60 power at my local Wal-Mart the other day for $70 that came with a fairly decent full size tripod and a soft carry case for both. I am very pleased with it. I dont know if it would be my first choice to use for spoting mountain goats from 5 miles away but for at the gun range it is more than enough. I was spoting my holes from my 30-06 with no problem.

Here is my take on it. Your binocular goes on every hunting trip and your spotter goes on every trip to the range. Those optics travel more than any rifle or rifle scope. They are used on every trip. Why should they not be the best optics you own?

A BIG AMEN to that point! Last year I bit the bullet and bought a Swaro spotter. Talk about a joy to use, that spotter delivers the goods. As someone else so aptly said above, a spotter, like binox, goes everywhere.
One thought is to try the Birchwood Casey Shoot N C Targets. They are a black target that shows bullets holes bright yellow. I've tried them and like them quite well. Sinclair International has them as well as other suppliers.
