I finally got out with my new bull barrel AR style rifle to get it broken in. I drove out to a friend's land to use his private range and shoot some ground squirrels and brought the 223 and my 10/22. I went through the 1 shot-1 clean routine, then some three shot groups and clean until I only had two rounds left. A ground squirrel decided to sun out on mound about 80 yards away between me and the target frame so he was the first blood drawn and then another came out at about 50 yards behing my target frame and he was the second victim. All in all I felt pretty good about how the new gun performed and packed up to go home. I stopped a couple of times to shoot a couple of squirrels with the 10/22 and turned toward the gate. About 300 yards from the gate a pair of young coyotes run across the road in front of me and stop on the side of the road and watch me at about 150 yards. I've got a 22rf with a 10 round magazine but 150 yards is not a humane shot, so I get out of my truck and actually look through the scope at the dogs and they just sat there! How in the He!! they know that I couldn't hurt them I don't know but those two were fearless. Never shoot all your ammo! Frank, The "humane" part of your post is applaudible!!! GOOD FOR YOU for not taking the bad shots!!! Clint Eastwood said it best in I think the original "Dirty Harry" or maybe it was the "Magnum Force" movie,....."A man's gotta know his limitations"!!! Good for you for not wounding the song dogs!!! The .223 would have done the deal on them!! But you were also good in doing the deal on "breaking in the barrel" and used up all your ammo!! Now in the future, you can be pleased that that barrel ought not copper foul as readily as if you'd just gone out and shot the hell out of it!!! Go ahead folks and J.I.M.S.!!! Barrel break in does work!!! GHD Groundhog Devastation(GHD)

It was Magnum Force. Harry Callahan (Clint) said it twice to Lt. Neil Briggs (Hal Holbrook). "A good man's got to know his limitations." And yes Frank, good for you. Restraint IS a good thing. Another Bakersfieldian, Mike.

With all the toys you have, you didn't have an extra just in case? Were you not feeling well? Nate

Half a dozen people at work said the same thing! Frank "I don't know what there is about buffalo that frightens me so.....He looks like he hates you personally. He looks like you owe him money." - Robert Ruark, Horn of the Hunter, 1953 NRA Life, SAF Life, CRPA Life, DRSS lite

Well , at a mere 150 yards , I'm afraid I wouldn't have been as sporting as Fjold , and I would have had to take a shot at the fuggers.....and yes, yotes can definately smell at quite long ranges, whether or not you have a suitable weapon and ammo for putting them down in your vehicle or not........
