My sister sent me this photo of a black color phase red fox. There are a lot of fox and coyote sightings in the Denver metro area, along with the odd black bear and cougar wondering in. My sis has a red fox that regularly walks across the top of her back fence in Littleton (Denver suburb).

What I wouldn't give..................

Steve Evans of Highlands Ranch took this photo of a black red fox on Feb. 15, 2012, who "was walking fences looking for food, e.g. birds, cats, or dog food."

There is room for all of God's creatures....right next to the mashed potatoes.

Yes, it is a Silver fox.

I have read that about 10% of all Red fox cubs born world wide. are born as Silver foxes.
Very far from that many of them grow up to adult foxes.
Maybe the mother usually kills them in the wild?

I have shot 600+ Red foxes and I have still not shot a true wild Silver fox. I have shot a few Silver fox escapees from fox farms many years ago.
I have only seen one true wild Silver fox in my life and sadly I didn't get a shot at him even if I saw him 3 times during a period of 2 weeks.
He was a huge male too.

I have also once seen a Samsons fox while hunting Red fox, but sadly I didn't got a shot at that either.

He looks like a fur farm escapee.

I'd like to have him on the wall, that is for sure!

Yep, he is a silver fox but not a very good one.

The black on his back comes down too far toward his butt as a good silver will be almost 100% silver on their back. When they are furred out with the long and plentiful silver they make a beautiful fox coat and are very valuable. A lot of them come from Canada and in the 1930's it was very popular for folks at the higher altitudes to raise them. Many mink farms would also have silvers as the food used is common to both.

They are hype active and 101% nervous all the time. It's not common for silver fox females to go nuts and eat their whole litter of kits.

We tried to raise some about 15-20 years ago and had very limited success for the efforts put forth and got out after 2 years. I still have one prime male hanging on the wall in our family room as a reminder of that time.

On the way back from Wolf hunting one day I happened across a large male Silver phase, landed and shot him while he was busy digging voles out of the snow. Traded him for enough gold nuggets to make a nice necklace and bracelet for "The War Department". Only one I have seen since.

This one came from AK.

I'd love to harvest a Silver, but doubt it'll ever happen. Frowner

Field sports are not about targets and scores. Score-keeping is necessary in competitions between humans, unattractive in competitions with weaker adversaries. Constant scores of many to zero do not smell of struggle and chance. They smell of greed.
