Question for those in the know. Lately Ive been seeing PHs in Namibia list Brown Hyenas and Aardwolves as something they offer. I haven't been there since 2007 and my info may be off, but I thought both of them were protected species at that time and/or a CITES permit might be necessary for their importation. Whats the real and current scoop?

Thanks in advance.

Americans can't import Brown Hyenas.

Maybe an aardwolf though.

Both animals have been huntable in the Limpopo or Eastern Cape for decades.

Good to know, Thanks! I did quite a bit of varmint calling in Namibia( for jackals primarily..) but actually called in 3 aardwolves on different occasions.
Why they would come to a call is beyond me...must be some long forgotten thing in their canine DNA.....
Never even saw a brown hyena....

I saw quite a few Aardwolves as well while calling in Namibia.

The PH claimed they were protected (2005).

I know that South Africa has a quota for export. Not sure if the USA is on that list of importers.

Considering how many thousands of Aardwolves there are in Namibia it is good to see that the Namibians can hunt them again.

I don't know what your experience was calling in Namibia, but I started in 1997 using a Sceery Cottontail call and the jackals were really easy...After my PH caught on and called them on his place for a couple years, they got pretty shy, and we went to night hunting with red lights.
Anyway, it was fun while it lasted, I called over numerous trips for the next ten years. Also went to Zim on a big game hunt and my PHs weren't keen on me calling in an area with lion and leopard....I could understand that Big Grin

I have only been once. I did it when I was single. I had hoped to get back in 2016, but I think it is going to take a few more years.

We used the red light and did very little day time calling. I think they aren't so into it like you say, they'd rather run the light.
