I dont know who to ask but i think you guys will know best. What is the official longest succesfull shot at an intended target ?
I once heard that in the middle east war a sniper took out an iraqi soldier from over 3000 meters. Do you guys know any factual stories/experiences of really really long shots on intended targets ?

I used to work with a guy in south Texas that routinely made shots (successful) on whitetail deer at seven tenths of a mile. From one gate to the next down a long sendero. His rifle of choice is the .264 WinMag. I do not remember the load. It was not factory.

The wife of a hunter I know has made some spectacular shots on deer, some in excess of 50 miles. How she makes those shots from home or the grocery store to where the buck was shot before it is tagged is simply amazing. animal

Without a search ... I think it was a Canadian in Afghanistan at 2400 yards.
But I don't think that counts as varmint hunting.

youngoutdoors,

I think those were some articles I wrote in the early-mid 'nineties for PS. I had the perfect set up, still do. I got the first test of the Leica Laser Rangefinder binoculars, and had built a 25 caliber rifle using the 6.5x68S blown out and sharp shouldered. 110gr Fowler VLD and a case full of WC860 for 3800fps. Premier Reticle boosted Leupold to 18X-42X. I spent the spring and summer shooting Rockchucks at longer and longer ranges. I got two one morning at 1007 and 1008 yards in front of several witnesses. There is luck involved, but I find that the more I shoot longrange, the luckier I seem to get. A seventeen pound rifle that will shoot in the low .3's (100/200/300yds) helps a lot.

Hey Rich, You have to be very good to just qualify for luck at that range. I also enjoy a little long range blasting. Do you still write for PS Mag? God Bless, Louis

I was on the USS James K Polk (SSBN 645) in 1979 and we shot 4 ICBMs from off the coast of Northern Africa west into the Atlantic Ocean (1500 miles) successfully into the one mile target area.

Somewhere in the gun forum internet world there is an excellent article that includes descriptions of gun and optics used to make a 3200 yd. shot on a single prairie dog. If I recall correctly it took five shots to make the hit.

hey there skb. that article is in the precision 1000 yard shooting book the shot was 3125 and i think the guy was using a 338 lapua shooting a 300 grn sierra at 2750 fps, he also had a steel gong strike at 3600 yards with the same rifle. He said that bullet drop was like 720 ft and the bullet had a 360 ft midrange rise above line of sight and had a time of flight of 7 seconds.

Sounds like some guys liked those articles. Glad to hear it!! Actually those were the 1st articles i had in PS. I'd been trying to get some articles in there for awhile. But the day i went into Bill's GunShop down here in Pueblo and Bruce Artus came out with that rig of his with the scope mounted on an angle high off the action i knew i was gonna be in like Flint, finally. I think Brennan always liked the controversial stuff. Had a series of articles on those guys--5 in all, 4 of which became a chapter in the book , "Precision Shooting at 1000 Yds."

I think my partner Ernie Bishop now has the record for a "handgun"--1590 on a prairie dog in 9 shots.

Another buddy Ray Prager has the record for a Contender handgun @ 1140 on a PD (2 with 1 shot believe it or not--which is probably a record for a dbl. too--maybe).

U know tho the best days of Precision Shooting magazine so far were the days of Rich Kayser and Boyd Mace. I sure miss those times and articles. In fact, those articles those guys had constitute a treatise of some of the best days of technical shooting ever written, IMO.
