A fellow pd shooter just picked up a Remington bolt action in 17 cal. He is going to use it for pds.

What bullets have you found to be best in the Remingtons? If you have a powder that works I would welcome that information also. I was going to try 4895 to start with.....??

Thanks.

Jim

Pdhntr1: Nice of you to help your friend.
I have three 17 Remington Varmint Rifles and they all shoot the wonderful Berger 25 gr. MEF bullets really well!
Two of my 17's prefer H 4895 powder and the third 17 Remington prefers IMR 4320!
All of my 17 Remington's use Federal 205 M (match) primers.
Two of my 17 Remingtons use Remington nickel plated brass and the third uses plain Remington brass.
All of my 17 Remingtons use the moly-coated Bergers - and as to this I am somewhat ambivalent!
I use it (the moly-coated bullets) and feel good about it but am not going to strongly recommend your friend buy the slightly more expensive moly-coated Bergers!
I love the 17 Remington in a good Prairie Dog Town.
I have tried other bullets in my Rifles including Calhoons and Hornady Spire Points and V-Max's but the Bergers really "shine" for me.
Accuracy and lethality with them are exemplary.
Best of luck to you and your friend.
Lots of time before the roads into Prairie Dog Town (up here in the northern Rockies anyway) are passable!
I shot some Prairie Dogs by the way in late November!
And my friend Ron and I saw a Black Footed Ferret "hunting Varmints" early one morning there late in November!
I enjoy being a nature watcher!

I have several 17 Rems & think they are fantastic for PDs.
I shoot exclusively 20 V max bullets & IMR 4320 powder, & rem 7.5 primers. You can get 4200 fps out of that combination. I have tried other 17 bullets & had pretty good success, but keep coming back to the 20 V max.

Hey pdhntr1 I shoot the 17 Rem and I found mine likes IMR 4320 with 25gr Hornaday's. At this time I do not moly coat them but I'm going to start. I'll recheck the load when I do. It shoots 5/8 of an inch now at 100yds. I have also found that if I turn the necks down a few thousandths it seems to help also. Hope this helps.

my standard load has been 25 gr of H380 and a 25 gr bullet for years, coupled with a rem 7 1/2 primer. I like the ball powder in the little neck better than stick, and according to mike walker (remmys genius of the time) who brought out the 17 rem. he said that in his tests the 7 1/2 primer gave by far the most consistant results, which was enuf for me to use them

I just got mine about a week 1/2 ago.I had a remington 700 LTR in 223 I was getting bored with and happened to see a new take off barrel 26 in 17remington on gunsamerica for $100.It arrived and I took it to my smith ,who as I waited swapped the barrels in about an hour as we traded hunting stories.

It was to windy until last week to sight it in using remington factory ammo w25gr HP.Oddly my first shot was right on w/respect to elevation at 50 yds,but about 1 1/2 feet to the left.Well I began to walk it over and when I finally got it centered I only had two rounds left.So I shot them and went to my target. When I got to the target I looked a the hole in the center of the bullseye and thought to my self damn you missed twice.I got the brass out of my vest and counted it to verify how many shots I took but then I looked at the last shot closer And it looked a round had key holed. That is when I realized three rounds had gone through that hole.I didnt have any thing to measure it with, but as you can imagine for 17cal. it was damned small.w/regards

butchloc,

One of the things that got my 204 shooting well was going to Rem 7 1/2 primers. I couldn't see any difference in any of my other handloads using these primers for 223 and 22-250, but they sure made a difference in the 204. I had already decided to use the Rems in the 17. Thanks for the information.

Jim

I have a pair of Remington 700s in 17 Rem, and I'll second the 25 gr. Berger MEF. It shoots better than the 25 gr. Match bullet in my 700s. Rifle #2 also likes the 25 grain Hornady. I use 4320 in both rifles for 25 grain bullets.

Rifle #1 likes 30 grain Bergers with H380, should you want to try some heavier bullets.

Thanks John Big Grin thumb

I will try what I have for powder and if I don't like what I see I will have to get some 4320.
