Anyone use Midway's Dogtown or Midsouth's Varmint Nightmare bullets? It's order time and I thought I might try them as they are cheaper than Vmax's or Nosler BTs.

I see Barnes has a "Varminator" bullet out now also. Anyone try'em yet? They are $2 a box cheaper than Vmaxs too.

thanks,
Ian

Most of my firearms are varmint rifles, and I reload for all of them. These are in .17Rem., .222Rem., .222Rem.Mag., .22-250Rem. If I can't make a rifle group around .6" or less I don't want it. You get what you pay for in bullets. Sierra and Nosler make excellent varmint bullets for the bench and field use. In some calibers the Hornady AMAX is also excellent.
Of course if you want to spend a little more you can go with Bergers. I don't think you can go wrong by using the better bullets in these smaller calibers. Best wishes.

Sir: i have fired hundreds of the midsouth 55 grain soft points in both bolt guns and ar's. they are fully satisfactory with regard to accuracy in both guns, shooting as good as i can shoot. i loaded 1k for my ar and shoot to 300 and sometimes get 2"x3" groups. the scoped bolt guns are better. no experience on varmints however. i don't know who made them, but they look like red h bullets. i actually get better overall length measurements than with other high$ pills. and no, i aint beholden to ms or whoever made them. just no qualms about tellin' where the cow bit the corn. happy hunting, ned

I think it kinda depends on what you're shooting at. If you're shooting ground hogs, where you may shoot a dozen shots in a good day, you would maybe go with the high priced spread. But if you're shooting sage rats, use the cheapest, bulk bullets you can find. You may be (pleasantly) surprised at how accurate the cheaper bullets are. I had a 22-250 that shot Rem bulk bullets about as well as anything else. If you're talking about the difference between .5 and .3, then its a personal call. I'll take the .5's and get about twice the bullets for the same money. [Big Grin]

I think I'll just stick with the Vmaxs. I know they shoot good and $2 per 100 isn't worth worrying about.

Thanks,
Ian

I buy all my rifle bullets from a Wholesale Supplier. They are usually WINCHESTER. They may not be quite as accurate [On al scale of 1 to 10 they would be a 9]. I have no trouble buying in "generic" bulk.

I have been loading the Midway "Dogtown" bullet, .224 55grn in my .223's and 22-250's and they will shoot an inch at 100 yds and have done some serious damage on the Prairie Dogs. I just ordered 500 of the Barnes "Varminator" in 50grn and will see next week what they do at the range.
The V-Max and Ballistic Tips don't shoot any better than the Midway bullet in my 14" Contenders so I order Midway by the 1000. I like to shoot alot. In my only custom barrel, Wilson 1-9 twist on my 22-250 I have to shoot the Sierra or Hornady 60 grn HP. The Midway and V-Max were coming apart at about 20 yds from the barrel due to the severe twist and velocity. They had too thin of skin. For all but one rifle I like the Midway bullets. All of them I have received have been in Winchester bags of 100, packed in a box of 1000.

The 1,000 pack of Speer's 50 grain TNT is a little cheaper than V-Max bullets and I can attest to their accuracy and terminal performance. They're a great bullet.

I second Vapodog as to my main Bullet for prairie dogs as being the 50 grain TNT Speer.
They are $7.95 per 100 from Cabelas. Very accurate and also very terminal performance.

For economy, I use the Winchester 55 gr FMJ a lot. Using Blue Dot powder, I think that works out to about 7.5 to 8 cents per shot. Cheaper than 22 mag ammo by quite a bit. Very accurate also.

I shoot a lot of the midsouth 55 grainers, and they are as accurate as any other bullet I've tried. In the .7's, anyway. FWIW, Dutch.

Anyone that buys their .22 bullets in 100's isn't a serious sage rat shooter. Might not even be a serious .22 shooter. [Big Grin]
