G'day all
I want to get myself another 22-250 for long range kangaroo shooting and after some help.I had many years ago a great remington 700 limited addision classic which i think was from around the early eighties which was fantastic but they don"t make those with a varmit barrel anymore.SO do I get a custom built model or buy one off the shelf ? Can anyone give me a recommendation for a good rilfe to purchase please

the Savage 12fv in 22-250 is an excellent choice. it has 26" varmint weight barrel. the one I have shoots in the .300" range at 100yds and the .600" range at 200yds if i do my part.

popcornThree of us not long ago bought Ruger Varmint rifles. My one cousin got his in .223 and my other cousin got his in 22-250. Mine is in .243. All three have been tack drivers and non have given us any problem.

Because of the slower twists on his 22-250 my cousin's rifle does not do a very good job stabilizing bullets over 60 gr.70 gr. VLDs are a shot gun pattern rather than a group. How does a limitation like this affect long range roo shooting? fishingroger

Do you head shoot them all? I never had any luck whatsoever body shooting them with a 223, they would jsut look at me and hop off like nothing had happened.
Perhaps a 22-250 might make a difference, I was sure wishing I had my 30-06 and a good 165 grain bullet.
Tough bastards they are.

I prefer to head shooting its a bit more of a challenge.BUT having said that I have shot them at 300m+ with body shots and had no trouble.I use 52grn hornedy hollow point boat tail match projectiles which seem to be the right medicine for them.I also know how you feel about them being tough, when I first shot them I use a 243win with 85grn projestiles shooting body shots and they just hopped away quite some distance before dropping!not good. Thanks for the thoughts. The only thing with the remingtons is that the only varmitters don't have a wooden stock from what i have seen, could be wrong will look into it.cheers

When you are body shooting them where do you shoot? I shot them right behind the elbow on side shots and right in the middle of the chest between the elbows when facing me.
It was not until I started taking nothing but head shots that I started seeing them drop.
Go over like bowling pins then..

I had a model 70 varmint rifle that I horse traded off, and it had a shot out 22.250 barrel on it..

I already had a factory set up in a Ruger VT, and a Ruger Sporter...

So I decided to put another 22.250 barrel on the Model 70 action.. I picked a 28 heavy magnum contoured stainless steel barrel from Pac Nor.. just went with the one in 12 twist...

This rifle is one of my favorite varmint rifles...

so I recommend going with an aftermarket barrel and get something exotic that you would really like, so you have something different from your other friends...

mine sure grabs looks and comments when I pull it out, in the field or at the range... that real long stainless steel barrel...folks just have to come and check it out.... and it also shoots like a dream, from 100 yds to 600 yds...

I body shoot just below the shoulder on a side shot and middle of the chest at the same level facing me which has them drop well.I think these shot's are a litle higher up than were you are aiming Bucko

The 60 gr. Hornady HP or SP is an excellent bullet for larger animals..I have shot a lot of deer and antelope with that bullet in both the 222 and the 22-250 with excellent expansion and exit holes of a nickle to quarter size. I have also found some under the off side hide and all were a perfect mushroom..I don't know of a better 22 caliber bullet for animals up to 150 lbs.

---Loud and clear but I think from my test results that the 60 grain barrier will equal or better the performance of which you speak. fishing roger
