After spending a fair amount of time calling this spring with no luck, I was sitting in my office having a meeting yesterday morning when I looked out the window and there was a coyote trotting by! He stopped about 70 yards out, turned braodside, and looked back at the building for about 20 seconds refore trotting off.... ARGGGG!!!
I am a varmint hunter of many years and moved from Ohio to Utah. Well I just had to try my luck at the coyotes out here. I didn't have what you would call a "varmit" rifle yet but did have a 303 that I sported up. I bought a call and camoed up and went out. After reading all the stories of guys not seeing yotes forever on hunts I thought I surley wouln't see them either, I sat my gun on a sage and sat down blowing the call. Before I knew it I had one within 3 feet charging in. WOW. I was so startled I started cusing at him...he stopped...looked at me like...why is this bush talking to me and then he ran off...On the same day I called in a eagle, sheepdog and many crows. I know how you feel and sad to say I have many stories like this...I think every one does. For such a so called stupid animal thay have handed many people there ass....I am a business man also and have a love hate relationship with these guys. If I could aford to I would do it every day
They are so damn unpredictable. The first one I shot I was turkey hunting. Had my decoy out and had been calling all morning with no results. Before packing it in, I blew my preditor call. A coyotte came running up and I killed it with my Duplex turky load at about 10 yards. The one I shot last October, I walked into the woods behind my construction site and standing there with no camo anything blew my call and one came running in that I dropped with my Thompson Contender .223 carbine at about 15 yards.
When I set up for them, no luck. I now have the screen off my office window and the .223 tucked behind the file cabinet. I hope I'm not meeting with a PETA member the next time a coyote trots by. If so..... Oh well!
As I told one fellow that was going to rack up big numbers trapping 'yotes, (seems he was something special in the fox trapping department) "there ain't no stupid coyotes". At his first set on his first day to run his line, he found a sprung trap and a pile of coyote manure that would do justice to a horse.

Are you trying to say Xtarheel that the yote was coming in on the turkey decoy....that would be a differant approach!!! I seen if you fly a crow kite it would draw them in but never tried it. The yotes around here I think have seen it all.
Years ago I bought a so called varmit call. Tried it several times with zero apparent luck. One early morning after a fresh snow found me on a ridge blowing my call like I knew what I was doing. About 10 minutes into it I gave up because did't see any coyotes and there were deer all over the place to look at. So I got up and there were three yotes within 100 yards of me. Of course they were all running my the time I saw them. Not near as dumb a some of us. At least me .
X,next time you go out take along a chicken wing. White, feathers and all. Hang it from a tree or bush so that it can move in the breeze. This will create a visual distraction for the yote and also attract them as they are curious. If that don't work email me for more and sneakier ideas.lol derf

Thanks Derf, I need all the help I can get. I found out where that Coyote was going. I walked in the direction I last saw him There is a dead deer over there where he was heading, guess he had been snacking on the carcas. I'll keep that carcus under observation in case he comes back for lunch although there is not much left.
