So, last year after doing our first P dog shoot I started looking at the laser scope Burris had just come out with but couldn't find anyone that had used one on P dogs, it's only a 12x but I figured what the hell and ordered it. Duct taped it to my new Remington XR 100 in 223 and after a little testing decided it liked the Hornady 40 gr. Vmax factory load so I set it up for that.

Back in Eagle Butte, SD this week to try it out and it is the shit!!! Now I gotta get one for all my other rifles. The two hardest things for me when shooting P dogs is judging the range and wind, the wind is a huge guess and after several years of rifle competition I got pretty good at that so the range was the big issue for me. Not any more. Laser the dog, hold the dot that lights up, adjust the hold for wind and let'er rip. More 1st shot kills with this setup than ever before. I'd love to have a little more power but it works fine as a 12x.

Thanks for the feedback. I've been curious about these myself.

Shooting a .223, why'd you need more than 12x? Do you really like to look at that mirage? Smiler

kend,

How far away could you reliably get a return reading on a prairie dog? Just wondering.

I lasered dogs at 500 with no problem providing I could hold it still, sometimes I had to laser the mound and work with that. I did get readings out to 600 but it wasn't consistent, not sure if it was the target or I just couldn't hold it.

I had the same report from a friend here in South Africa.

He loves the scope.

I've seen quite a bit of wind here in SD but I had no idea it could blow as hard as it did today. Looking for an excuse to take a break we used that and spent the day sightseeing, went to Mt. Rushmore and drove through the Badlands. If you ever get the chance to see Rushmore you should go, the place is amazing!! And the Bison Burger is great!

Anyways, killing time we stopped in Cabelas and I looked at the Bushnell Laser scope, it looks the same as the Burris except the reticle doesn't adjust for drop, it appears you have to laser it to get the range and then use the Mil-Dots to adjust your hold. That could explain the nearly $200 difference in price.

Just an update -- Looks like they are now making a 4-16 Burris Laserscope

Plus, the newest Burris Eliminator has the capability to input custom load data. The one and the Two didn't. That will make it even more reliable IMHO.
