Has anyone been to the squirrel wars in Modoc County California? I am seriously thinking about making the trip this year and would like to know what to expect. What contacts do I need to make in advance? All the ususal stuff. It's not quite like getting outfitted to go on a big game hunt but I take it just a serious, maybe more so. Any and all information will be appreciated. DW

I have been one time. Call the three motels in the Town of Cederville they will let you know latest up dates.Must find out when they cut the fields. Can't shoot what you can't see.The squirrels are small but they still blow up just fine. If you drive into town you can just ask ranchers for permission. They day I went it was super hot mirage was present hard to see squirrels. You need to be on high ground to see way out.

My son and I were talking about a trip like this just the other day.

I had so much fun sneaking up on PDs on the Rosebud some years back with my M52, I was thinking 3 or four rimfires and a Hornet might be just the ticket. A lot more fun than I had popping them at 200+ with the Swift.

They sure do jump nice with the Swift though!

Is Cedarville the Mecca of ground squirrel shooting? Is southern OR still good, too?

Modoc County, particular Cedarville and Ft Bidwell are loaded and the shooter pressure is not that serve, in ratio to population...

Lakeview in Oregon, just to the north is also a high volume populated area for sage rats, and the hunting pressure is low...

Squirrel Wars in Cedarville is in March sometime every year....contact the Cedarville Chamber of Commerce.. as it is a major event down there...

Hotel Accomodations are sparse, but the camping opportunities are not... farmers in Oregon let us camp on their property or others set up their motorhomes and 5th wheels.... they just aren't real keen on campfires...

Most of these land owners are pretty friendly, especially if you aren't an asshole.... and most won't charge for you to shoot their property and will let you come back every year if you are not a slob hunter and pick up your brass if you are shooting an AR... they don't seem to mind 22LR and other rimfire brass...

A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him "Why do you carry a 45?" The Ranger responded, "Because they don't make a 46."

Thanks everyone, I am planning on going, being there 2-3 days with a day to travel each way. I want to take a couple of 22 rimfires, a hornet, a .223 and a .22-250. I was thinking of tent camping but a motel or an improved campground with a shower would be nice. I will contact the chamber of commerce and post my findings. DW

I used to own a lot of land in Modoc County. Stop in at the USDA Forest Service on HW 299 Between Canby and Alturas and buy a Forest Service map that will show forest service and BLM lands where you can hunt most any time. March/April are the best months but they are there almost year round. Most of the ranchers in the area are very friendly and will be glad for you to shoot dogs and squirrels, they will even tell you where they are. South of Alturas on 395 in the little wide spot Likely is the Likely Saloon, the finest saloon in Northern California.

My buddies and I have been going to Cedarville for many years to shoot squirrels, but we go after the war because there's too many people otherwise. Lou
