My experience is more like Duane's. You may find a few dogs with Presidential-like I.Q.'s within a hundred or two yards when you first pull into a town, but after a few shots, you'll be looking at most opportunities in the 200+ range, with most of them nearer 300. Of course there are shot opportunities as far away as the town is large, but the bulk of your "doable" shots will be from 200 to 350 after the initial volleys. Closer range "pop ups" will occur after a lag in shooting, allowing that Hornet or .17 RF to see a little action from time to time through the day.

In the places I shoot in Utah and Wyoming most of my shots are in the 250-350 range. I would love to find a spot that offered several targets under 150 yards. I zero my 223 for 250 yards and my 220 swift for 350.

Hope this helps.
