Ruger announced that it will be producing rifles cambered in its new ".204 ruger". The new cartrige is based on the .222 Rem. necked down to .20 Cal. Benifits are said to be "higher velocity than 22-250 & 220 swift, but uses less powder so no loss of barrel life." Here's the link:

If Ruger is basing it on the .222 Magnum I sure hope they don't use Remington brass!

Which one is it based on, the .222Rem. or the .222Rem.Mag.? It makes quite a bit of difference in such a small case. There's about a 3 grain difference in case capacity. They really seem to be going overboard on these small calibers. I'm not sure it's really worth it. Best wishes.

According to the press release from Ruger that's been reposted on several sites, it's the .222 Rem Mag.

That's wonderful news to me. I have a .222Rem. Mag. rifle, made up some years ago. I've
been afraid Remington would discontinue making brass for it, and I'd be out of the water. If the .204Ruger is based on the .222Rem. Mag. case and becomes popular I could be smiling for years to come. Best wishes.

Cal,

You could always neck up .17 Remington brass, which is also based on the .222 Remington Magnum.

If they bring the thing out, I guess I would just have to twist my arm and make myself try one! I've been shooting a 222Mag for a long time and also the 6x47 so a stock of brass is no big problem for me! Do I need another "little" varmint round since the 17HMR, 222Mag, 243AI seem to handle most of the shorter stuff and the 25-06(devastation supreme) gets the job done? NO but I haven't got one so I may as well get another toy!!! GHD

Darn, too bad they do not make it in a left hand model, I would buy one. I bet it will work great on chucks!

Ohlsen: Not to be contrary here Ohlsen but I use Remington brass in my custom Sako 222 Remington Magnum heavy barreled Varminter and have for years. It is excellent brass and helps produce splendid groups in my 222 Remington Magnum! The brass is uniform and exceptionally long lived! I am puzzled why you hope Remington brass would not be used? I have heard that Hornady is going to be making the ammo for the 204 so you may get your wish. But that still does not alleviate my puzzlement!
Also I have a SENSATIONALLY accurate Remington 40XBBR-KS in caliber 6x47. This is a factory stock Rifle and I use Remington 222 Magnum brass in it. The Remington brass has helped me obtain this SENSATIONAL accuracy which has produced groups as small as .151" for 5 shots at 100 yards!
This was done with bullets also suited for Varminting! I have known many people over the years who have used the Remington brass in their 222 Remington Magnum Varminters and obtained excellent accuracy. And as far as I can recall no complaints about longevity.
Have you had bad experiences with the Remington 222 Magnum brass?
Hmmm???? The older I get the more questions I can't answer about reloading and different peoples opinions on specific componenets.
I of course know that Remington brass is not perfect but with easy steps I have taken in the past and use now the Remington brass works fine for me in dozens of Rifles.
I bought earlier this year a beautiful Sako single shot bolt action Rifle in caliber 6mm PPC. The new unfired Rifle came from an estate and there was a modest supply of Sako (Norma?) unfired brass that came with it. The Rifle shot so well I called around trying to find more Sako 6mm PPC brass for my Varminting uses. Its out there but its $23.00 for 20!!! Thats $1.15 per each piece of brass! Hmmm!!!! If Remington made PPC brass I think I would surely try it!
I am warming up to this new Ruger cartridge the more I read about it. I am sure once I get one I will delve into my lifetime supply of Remington 222 Remington Magnum brass for my load testing. And I will do so with no hesitation whatever about its quality and ability to produce accurate cartridges with.
Interested to hear your experiences with the 222 Remington Magnum brass.
