John- Mine has a 27 1/2" Hart. I like longer barrels, but realize that on the 222 it may be unnecessary. As for "overstabilized", I never bought into that theory. I routinely shoot 53 and 55 grain bullets out of a 1-8" twist 223, with excellent results. At the relatively "slow" speed of a 222, I can't see how overstabilization would ever be a factor, especially in the 1-10" to 1-12" range that you're considering.

I've two 700's both with 26" w/1-14 twist. This is pretty much standard for 55gr or less bullet weight. I've used up to 63gr's in 1-14 with acceptable results. I stick pretty much with the 50 grainers, great accuracy and velocity. I really haven't needed anthing heavier for what I shoot.

FOr a .222, a barrel of 23-24" should be about optimum. And don't worry about overstabilizing a bullet; within reason, you can't...

I have two rifles in .222Rem. Both are real tack drivers with 50, 52 and 55gr bullets. Both rifles have 1 in 14" twists. I've never seen the need for bullets of other weights. The caliber and twist are very accurate with these bullet weights. If we were at a disadvantage in not being able to use the 60-69gr bullets we certainly didn't know it. Best wishes. Been shooting 222 Remingtons (and 222 Remington Magnums) for thirty years. Have had both factory and custom rifles built on Remington, Sako, and Savage actions. Currently shooting two 222 rifles -- both with 26 inch barrels and 12 inch twist. Usually use 748 powder with Sierra 52 HPBT. No troubles. Considering going to heavier bullets for greater penetration on game.

Hi Thanks for the input, I have been using a 26" standard barrel on my little Rem722 and it has some pitting and is a little on the worn side. I have also been thinking along the lines of a rebarrel to 6x45 or possibly 223AI. Just a thought. Thanks again JohnC
