Got this one a couple years back with that Cooper .17 Ackley Hornet. Got these two a couple years before that with a .17 MachIV. Got this young one year before last with a .20 Tactical at just under 500 yards. Got a number of em since but no pics. We hatesses Badgers . One a the landowners I eradicate pests for once told me "hell, I'd love badgers if they just filled in their holes behind themselves. Truer words were never spoken! Doug, nice badgers and coopers! I am thinking about the following Coopers, not selecting one but getting all of them. 338-06, 280, 25-06, and 17hmr in the repeater 220 swift, 6mm BR, and 204 in the single shot. Any advice? How's the new Phoeonix?

Because it's your thread D99 I guess it's ok if we hijack it so... As to Coopers in general I know there guaranty is 1/2 inch at 100 yard 5 shot groups with good ammo and from my experience most will do that or better out of the box and the one's that haven't get worked on till they do (great customer service). All of the rifles you mentioned sound great but I must confess to being a sub-.22 caliber junkie so the .204 sounds like my personal pick for varmints. Having said that I'm sure fixating on their new model 52 in .280 Ackley improved for a new elk rifle I need like I need a hole in the head. As to the Phoenix itself, mine is a .17 MachIV and it shot this 5 shot group using 25 grain V-Max's. Pretty amazing as everyone that reads magazines know's .17 calibers can't shoot for beans huh? so much for believing everything ya read. This is the rifle. The stock has some color to it I like that the picture doesn't show so here's a close up. I'm a big fan of Cooper rifles but also anything else that goes boom and is accurate. As the good Colonel said, "The only interesting rifle is an accurate rifle!" Hope that helps. P.S. As to .17HMR's (I have several and love em, a CZ and and 2 Anschutz, no Coopers), Here's a badger I shot with mine. A little joke there . As I understand it that badger (Grizzly) got shot with the front bumper of a Dodge pickup up near Lincoln Montana. What the heck, they both got claws "If a man buys a rifle at a gun show and his wife doesn't know it"...Did he really buy a rifle? Firearm Philosophy 101. montdoug

280 Ack, I was thinking about that too. Still don't know. I wish they made the 6.5x284 in a repeater. If they end up doing a short action repeater I want one of those too. I asked about a 9.3x62 and got told "NO!".

They are such nice rifles, Cabela's here has two a used 223 in a Varminter and a used 22 WRM in a Varminter repeater. I think they are $1200 each.

Here is one I took while out shooting p-dogs in 2005. Shot him with my 17 HMR. Hit him the first shot and he went to spinning and biting at his side were the bullet entered. Shot two more times before anchoring him. I guess one shot hit him in the leg when he was doing his best, and last, impression of the Tazmanian Devil!! Also took this little guy earlier in the morning, while checking on a couple of pheasant holes. Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

I like the 6X20 Weaver Grand Slams a great deal, I have quite a few of them. They might not be quite the scope some of the Leupold side focus's are but they are at a minimum 2 for one to 3 for one with change. I find them very user friendly and as a right handed shooter that shoots varmints from a swivel bench in the back of my truck a lot I like the left side read on the power and parallax adjustments. Lotta bang for the buck in my opinion. Seafire you shoot that one outta the shower? Big badger. "If a man buys a rifle at a gun show and his wife doesn't know it"...Did he really buy a rifle? Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger so far this year. Five were in one day. .223 Remington accounted for 3, .22 Hornet for 6, 17 HMR for 2, 17 HM2 for 1 and 22 LR for 1.

Just one for me this spring while out looking for ground squirrels. Thats what the badger was doing also. 22 hornet with a 40 grain Barnes Varminator at 60 yds did the trick.

FC Selous Stu, I dissagree, ours are tougher, yours are pansies! And our wolverine makes a lion and a hyena look like a girl! But seriously folks. I went through the Wyoming hunting orders to find that you have to buy a trapping permit to shoot a badger, but you can whack all the porkypines, fox, coyotes, and jackrabbits you want with just your proof of a hunters safety certificate. You can shoot badgers year round though.

I have taken them as targets of opportunity over the years. Last fall I called in my first two badgers two months apart in different parts of the state. Bob There is room for all of God's creatures....right next to the mashed potatoes. http://texaspredatorposse.ipbhost.com/

Nice badgers guys, love the photos. I am hopeful to get one for my Wyoming November varmint safari. Dad has a couple of places he thinks will be good. Plan on putting the fox pro to good work.

As a matter of fact I shot a badger while out shooting prairie dogs on October 24, 2008. I had been out shooting PDs for about 2 hours and was on my way back toward my vehicle when I spotted this young badger chomping on one of the prairie dogs I had shot. I got to about 150 yards from him and got my Leica 1200 range finder on him and ranged him at 146 yards. He might have seen me sneaking up on him because as soon as I got into shooting position, he picked up the prairie dog in his mouth and started waddling away from me. I got the crosshairs on him and squeezed of the shot. I was shooting my Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger. My bullet was the 39 gr. Sierra BlitzKing and it leaves the muzzle at about 3,866 fps. The badger just laid over sideways when the bullet hit with the prairie dog still clenched tightly in his mouth. His hide wasn't quite prime yet, but he was a pretty colored badger. I had forgot about this thread, as I was out of the country hunting Obama, I mean Osama and didn't get a lot of chances to AR. Thanks for making it a great thread!

Here is my pic, I find it odd and nice at the same time to see the differences in the badgers shown in this thread. Best regards Chris

Chris nice European badger, those things are very interesting. When I hunted in Germany with Gerry, we tried to get me one but it didn't happen. I did miss a big vixen fox from about 50 yards. It was a pretty sad day!

Thank God larger carnivores don't have the same fight per pound in them as any badger or wolverine! If they did, walking the woods would be MUCH more dangerous.
