Making a fox fur coat

Has anyone ever done this? I'm thinking about having one made for my wife out of red fox but don't know how much of a production it will be. I'm planning on getting the pelts, having them tanned, then sending them off somewhere to be made into a coat.

Any suggestions or personal experiences out there?

Thanks!

Mark

Do a search and you ca nfind a number of companies that make them. I was looking into having one made out of Coyote and found it was going to cost 800 or more AFTER having the pelts done and they wanted to do them as well.
I also didn't get a responce from most of the companies that I found a web site for.
Let me know when you find someplace as I still want to do it.

You're getting in WAY over your head.

You won't be able to match furs and assure the other quality control that a competent furrier would be able to do in a commercial situation. And, it will run you a lot more than simply going to a shop and buying something off the rack.

I second Genghis' comment. The pelts used for fur coats are "let out" that is cut into thin strips and sewn back together again even before that tailoring process begins. You will also have QC issues with any pelts you acquire and tan yourself. You are FAR better off going to a store or believe it or not a pawn shop and looking for a coat that your wife likes. Another note, fox is not as durable as mink and lynx is even less durable that fox.....

USA-FOXX furs out of Duluth or somewhere up there has an add out for just what you ask. Although I've heard some less than shining reports about them they have a very informative catalog.

As for the fur matching up and all that BS, nowdays the furs are often dyed to match, they still look natural, just more consistent.

If you were thinking of still going through with it, I'd also look into Moyle Mink Tannery as they do a great job for a reasonable price.

Thanks Matt!

This was what I have been looking for, sending them an email right now. When I know how many pelts they suggest I'll post it here too, as right now I haven't a clue.

My sister-in-law has sewn pelts. Used fox to make a vest and another coat IIRC. Fur is a real pain to work with, but her's came out nice. Took her a LOT of time and work. It also takes an industrial quality (Surger) sewing machine to get the stitching tight enough.

e-mail with your address and I'll ask if she's interested. It takes a little over twice the pelts you'd think it would
