Stretching out a 250 Savage

(I realize many of your routinely shoot two and three times this distance, this is my longest shot to date.)

One of my combination deer rig/varmint guns is a new Savage Model 14 Classic American chambered for the old 250-3000 Savage with a 1-10 rate of twist.

Last groundhog of the evening was out at 326 paces, over and across to the next hill with no time left to any stalk closer. Screwed the VXII 4x12 Leupold all the way up to maximum magnification, set the parallaxes out to 300, then placed the crosshairs above his shoulders and started a slow squeeze on the Accutrigger.

The little bugger turned into the flash of the muzzle and caught the 90 grain Sierra HP right on the nose. It changed his mind forever!

Load info: W-W cases, CCI magnum primers, 90 grain Sierra HP, 35.5 grains of H4895, OA 2.515. Should be moving along at over 3000 fps. Wink

Oh man, what a neat cartridge in a real classic stock. Not to mention the accu-trigger.
Twenty years ago I bought a Remington Classic in 250 Savage. Wanted a bit more oomph!, so I had it rechambered to 25-284. Same-same 25-06 in a short case.
Like an idiot, I sold it to a buddy who was a dedicated sheep hunter. He still has it, loves the light weight packing it around at 10,000+ feet.

Congrats on the kill with the .250 Savage. Yes the .250 Savage really is a neat, under-rated cartridge.

Several years ago I had one in a 14" SSK Indsutries T/C Contender Barrel. I used it for Prairie Dogs and Whitetails, and a buddy shot a Coyote or two with it. Very neat cartridge.

I'm glad to see renewed interest in this great cartridge. Mine is a re-barreled model 10 Savage(pre 14 Classic). I was fortunate enough to find a Savage 25/06 take-off to re-chamber. So, in my mind I have a Savage model 10 in 250/3000.
Congrats on your sucess with your new rifle.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

Nice going Olgrouser!
My next purchase will be the EXACT same thing as yours. I have been considering a 250 Savage for about a year now.

popcornjust got through loading a bunch of 90grain hps.( no bt)for my Stevens Mod 200 and a 1-10 Shaw barrel I had changed over a new .243. It is also long throated to facilitate setting bullets out farther. The 90 to 120 grain bullets so far are doing a good job. beerroger

You might also want to try the Hornady 75 grain V-max bullets as they print very well too. This four shot group (including my flyer) tells you what these new Savages CAN DO!

I'd initially bought a 1962 Rem. Model 700 .243 (five digit serial number) to rebuild into a 250AI but it was TOO accurate. Just had the trigger tuned to 2 1/2 lb. and she's another of my varmint / deer rifles. Smiler
