I had a heavy BBL 223 several years ago for cyotes. Every time I went out I would come across large ugly hogs. I hit several in the head, shoulder and ribs and never found one.
The new Savage Laminated Varment Rifles work.
I gave up on light calibers for where I hunt. I just got a Savage 12 laminated stainles fluted varmint rifle in 300 WSM. This gun shoots flat at anything. The first time that I shot it to get the scope on target. the third shot went thru the same hole as the second. I have tried several loads and can't find a bad one. They all shoot under 1" My first shot was at a hog at 180yds . I used a 150 gr factory winchester ($ 25 at wallmart) to put one in its tear duct.

The new dual pillar bedding and accutrigger work magic.

my brother was asking me about an affordable .223 rifle to shoot coyotes with......does anyone have any experience either way with a savage varmint centerfire rifle?? i don't have any centerfire rifles an i'm curios too......are they accurate as a rule or should we steer away from them? i would reload for them if that makes any difference.....

You would have a hard time spending money more wisely than on a Savage. They have a well deserved reputation for superb accuracy.

I would have to agree with the previous post, get a Savage! If you buy one, make sure it has the Accu-trigger! These rifles are amazingly accurate right out of the box, and with this trigger, you dont have to buy an aftermarket or have the factory "tweaked" to make it less than most 6 pound triggers. I have a Savage 112 BVSS, I have not found anything bad to say about it. Shoots well, and is a good looking rifle.

thanx for the quick replies paul and marmont..... i'm thinkin 223 would be a good caliber to hunt coyotes with an easy to find once fired brass to reload with.........

If you're concerned with out of the box accuracy and affordability, a Savage is a great choice. (I have three of them)

i have to agree the savage to be the best trigger from the factory. its very nice, crisp, and make sure to lower the tigger to its lowest setting,i cant say enough about it.also took my cap locks off no shouting here just" burning powder"

My brother recently bought a savage (fv?) in 22-250 and it shoots very well and the trigger is very nice. The rifle was inexpensive and he topped it with an elite 4200 4x16. We tried several different loads and they all shot under an inch @100. The synthetic stock is a little cheap feeling, but it gets the job done. My next varmit rifle will be a savage.

I also have a .223 Savage and love it. Its main duty is prairie dog disembowelment, so I topped it with a 6 x 20 Weaver. Its one of the heavy barrel jobs.

If you're looking to go after coyotes mainly strongly suggest you get one without a bull barrel and get a lower power variable scope. .223 is a great choice for coyotes.

Tough to go wrong with a Savage.

......ditto to all of the above.....great value, very accurate! I would get a "hunter" model and not a "varmint" model for coyotes though. You just don't need the big heavy barrel for carrying in the field. Like the guys said, make sure it has the accu-tirgger. All of the new ones have it, but some of the dealers may still have some earlier models.

Take a look at one in person. I was at Gander today and seen a rack of ten of the Savages and they look to me like something out of a bargin rack. Cheap wood plain and a bolt knob that looked like a door knob. I just prefer to own something that looks as good as it shoots. Now if your on a limited budget and get one that shoots as good as some say they do thats fine. I am just stating my opinion my experience and what I have seen and heard first hand. Good Luck with whatever you chose.

Having only used my new 10FP .223 once in the field , I must say I agree w/Bob on this one. Mine is the 24" model and it does not carry well on the sling due to heavy barrel. The heavy barrel might be an advantage for groundhog or other uses where many rounds are fired in a short period of time, but for other varmint hunting it sure gets heavy. Other than that, I have nothing but praise for the Savages, in spite of their somewhat homely appearance. I place a much higher value on performance over appearance.

Still getting used to the accu-trigger. Mine came set @ 1.5# and I am not used to such a light trigger. Even my match rifles are set @3.5#. I find myself a bit slow on the trigger when hunting, afraid of a premature discharge, I guess. I'm sure that will change with use, and if not, the rifle comes w/trigger adjusting tool (unlike other manufacturers).

The three position safety on the Savage is also a + in that the rifle can be unloaded while still on safe, unlike other designs.

My old (pre-accu-trigger) 338 WM shoots 5/8" groups @ 100 yds w/225 gr. Hornady Interbond or Nos. Accubonds. The FP has not seen any real accuracy tests yet. Barely had time to break in the barrel and it was off for coyote hunting. Only shot one group with it and that was a 1" three shot @ 100 yds w/Win. 53 gr hp factory ammo. Looking forward to playing w/reloads as time permits.

Regards,
hm

My little bro got a model 12 with heavy barrel and the accu-trigger in 223 for shooting p-dogs a couple years back and this rifle shoots as good if not a bit better than the Remingtons I have, the trigger is a damn site better on the Savage and you can adjust it yourself without fear of screwing up! it came with the 26" barrel and it is now a 20" with a new crown and it did nothing but make the accuracy better which it went from a solid 1" @ 100 to .625". If this rifle will be a calling or carry rifle take the advice and go with a light barrel, figure your not gonna get more than a couple shots anyway and the barrel will not heat up that quick. Go with the heavy if you gonna shoot mass loads of bullets downrange say like in a p-dog town but the Savage well it's kinda homely without all the fancy pretty wood and deep blueing but hey you wont be as upset the first time you srcatch it Later,

Kirk
