Just bought a Rem 700 SPS 22-250. Just found out it has a 1-14" twist.
What is the heaviest bullet I should expect to stabilize with this twist rate?
I had hoped I would be able to shoot some of the heavier, longer bullets at extended ranges. Don't think that's gonna be the case now.
Need some feedback from some people with more experience than me.
Thanks for any help.

It will shoot the 55 gr. bullets just fine and it may shoot the 60 gr. Partitions.

Good Hunting,

Bob

Thanks, Bob.
Since this will be a dedicated varmint rifle I should be fine with the 55 grainers. I have plenty of other rifles for extended ranges. Might have to go back to my trusty .25-06 for the longer ranges.
I appreciate the feedback.

I sometimes think that people who are trying to varmint with heavy bullets in a 22-250 should just get a .243 instead and shoot 87 vmaxes! I have a VSSF 700 that has the same 1:14 twist and it absolutely thrives on Nosler 55gr ballistic tips. 33.5 gr of Benchmark gets 3650fps and ragged hole accuracy. And it smokes the dickens out of groundhogs! Some of you may have read my post on "end of season bonus round" where I describe a first-shot kill at 710 yards. I got this VSSF rifle from a local Sportsmen's Warehouse that was going out of business, and I have used it a lot this year with great success.

I would surmise to say that the rifle will PROBABLY shoot 60 grain VMAXS just fine also. Like chuckmusher said, the 22-250's are great varminters and just how long do you consider "long range?" My Ruger Target Gray likes the very same powder charge, 33.5 grains of Benchmark but utilizing the 55 grain Sierra BlitzKing and it's a legitimate 600 yard+ groundhog gun. Then it's generally time for the 6mm using the 87 grain VMAXS to come out of hiding. Don't sell your 22-250 short on some very long varmint shots! As far as the 25-06 goes, if I was doomed to only have ONE RIFLE for all my hunting, then the 25-06 would probably get the nod(260 Remington would be in the running as well as the 22-250!!)but it can be humbled at extended ranges SIMPLY because the bullet manufacturers refuse to make legitimate long range .257 diameter bullets. Try some of the good varmint bullets (the Nosler 55's, Sierra 55's and 55 VMAXS and 60 grain VMAXS)in that SPS and you just may find out you have a "winner" already. Charlie (GHD)

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I am very aware that you guys are veterans and avid varmint hunters from my "lurking" on this thread. I'm a rank novice compared to you guys and I appreciate the fact that ya'll are willing to help.
I already have a lot more confidence in my new rifle. I handload for my favorite rifles, and look forward to working up some loads for this one.

I consider "extended ranges" to be 600 plus. The reason: That's because the longest shot I've personally made on a live animal was an antelope, walking left to right at a hair over 600. And that was with my .25-06, the most accurate rifle I own, and the rifle I have the most confidence in. It would be the last rifle in my armory if it ever came down to that.

I'm looking forward to getting the .22-250 broke in and working up some loads for it.

Thanks again for the input.

You might give Big Game a try for your powder. Over the years, I went from Varget, to RL-15, to Big Game. They all shoot great with the 55 gr. bullets in the 22-250. The Big Game is very easy to meter and gives me .5" groups in my 22-250.

Good Hunting,

Bob

You can run 50 grain V Maxes etc out of it at around 3900 fps... that will be a flat shooter, and vermin exploder... or try the 36 grain Varmint Grenade...
