Good day to all, I need some help from some of you as to finding out the cost of a varmint license in different states. Reason being: I am from Canada, I may or may not go on a prairie dog hunt this summer, being from Canada I have to have a license of any kind in any state to be able to get a permit to import my handguns or rifles into the United Stated and this has to be done about six to eight weeks before I go. What I plan on doing is geting the cheapest license I can get to get my permit to import my firearms in case I'm able to go hunting and if I can't make it, I'm not out too much money. Can I get some of you guys to tell me the price of different predator or varmint license in your state please? Thanks in advance. Mike

Here are a few, hope they help. Nevada has a Non-resident General Hunting license for about $111.00. www.state.nv.us/cnr/nvwildlife/ Michigan has a Non-resident small game license for about $65.00 (as of 2001) and a Non-resident 3-day small game for $28.00. www.michigandnr.com Arizona has a Non-resident small game license for about $35.00 or so. I don't have there website handy but when I bought one 2 years ago that is about what I paid as a non-resident. If you are going into Arizona be sure to have at least the small game tag even if you are just shooting jack-rabbits or target shooting in the desert. If you are in the desert or hills with a gun they will assume you are hunting and write you a citation for hunting without a license. Good luck.

Texas also has a very inexpensive non-game license. This gun import thing is getting a little silly, IMHO, Dutch.

Mike, You could be more specific as to what states would make sense for you. However due to the anal nature of govt. officials I would get the specific information, forms etc. myself. For instance NY state charges $55 for non resident small game but there is a specific page now for Canadian hunters. I did not read that page but sure enough it's full of make work for themselves. Thanks for the replys so far, Savage99:This permit in general doesn't make sense to me. Neither does our fricken Canadian laws but anyways. It doesn't matter what state it's from to get this permit, as long as I have some US license, that's why I'm looking for the cheapest, that way if I don't make it hunting in the US I'm not out too much. In a way that's not all bad, It doesn't make sense, but for me, I'm not sure if I'll make it on a hunt to the US or not so all I have to do is get a cheap license and as long as it's valid I can bring my guns accross. Last time I checked , a non-resident predator license cost you $30 in SD , and this entitled you to shoot stuff like prairie dogs and gophers as well as coyotes . Check into states like WY or MT , they may have a cheaper deal ......... [ 03-11-2003, 23:24: Message edited by: sdgunslinger ]

mikehjd - If you haven't already been forewarned - while many states do not have many restrictions on sporting use of long guns, there are many states that have restrictive laws about handguns. For example, here in New York it is (with few exceptions) illegal for a non-resident to possess a handgun (doesn't matter if it's for hunting or protection). A good link (if you really want to investigate) is: http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/statelaws/22edition.htm

Mike: The cost here in New Mexico for a year-long non-game license is $50. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with. Tom Purdom

North Dakota requires a $2.00 Nonresident fishing, hunting, furbearer certificate on which you must affix your $25.00 Nonresident furbearer and nongame license. Total cost = $27.00 Here's a link to the North Dakota Game & Fish Department Web site page listing Licences and Regulations. Just scroll down and click on the Nonresident Application for Licenses link: http://www.state.nd.us/gnf/licenses/ Or try clicking on this link to the PDF page with the fees listed: http://www.state.nd.us/gnf/licenses/docs/sfn-6075a.pdf

Thanks for the replys everyone, I will probably get the North Dakota License because it seems to be the cheapest. With that I can get my license to get my guns into the USA if it happens that I can make it for them furry little prairie dogs. Thanks again Mike
