Just wondering what has been the experience of the board with the 17HMR on best cleaning interval? IE how many rounds between cleaning before accuracy deteriorates?

APB, When the 17HMR was first being talked about, and having significant amount of experience with other high velocity varmint chamberings including the 17 caliber centerfires, my first thoughts on it was that it would be little copper fouling beast!!! WRONG!!!!!!!!! There have been somewhere in the neighborhood of 4000 rounds down the tube of the original MARLIN 17VS I got when they first came out(that one was about the first one to get to the state of VA) and doing barrel break-in I was somewhat amazed to find no traces of copper on patches!! And since that time using cleaning intervals of 100,200, 300, 500 rounds, I still have yet to get the telltale "blue" of copper on a patch from it!! It will still do sub 1/2MOA at 100 or 200 yards!! I don't worry about it anymore!! The accurracy seems to be there whether it's clean or shot 500 times!! Just go shoot them and enjoy!! Actually if you read the MARLIN owners guide, they state that the bore may never need cleaning!!! The 17HMR is a little modern day wonder!! Maybe the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed in all my years of messing with rifles!! GHD

This is good to know GHD.

What about the M2, is it the same self cleaning?

Marlin must go to extra effort to polish their bore's real well.
That's what I've found that keeps fouling down. Take an hour and polish hell out of it, then clean it real well and go to shootin and I've yet to find a fouled bore after a workout like that with either Butch's, or Corbin grit.

Anyone else do it this way?

georgeld, For as much as I have shot 17HMRs and am a big fan of them, I have not owned one of the HM2's!! I shot a friends one day about 20 times and that is the extent of my HM2 experience! My gut feeling is that they would be like the HMR though on the cleaning intervals. GHD

From the owners manual (Mine in now 18 hours old Big Grin): "With normal use it is not necessary to clean the bore of your rifle"

I cannot wait for the weather to become civil and go shoot this thing!

APB: I was cleaning my Ruger 77/17 V/T every 50 rounds when it was (and they were!) brand new!
This was done out of lack of knowledge(ignorance on my part) and the newness of this round and what it did fouling wise!
I now clean every 100 rounds (2 boxes of ammo) and I am not sure that is even neccessary!
I have a friend that ran 400 rounds through his CZ in 17 HMR IN ONE DAY, last year, in a Gopher Fest. I was right along side him most all day and the accuracy never did seem to fall off for him!
I am still speaking from ignorance (lack of knowledge) somewhat in this regard but I certainly have not noticed declining accuracy there at the end of my now 100 round strings.
I would definitely take groundhog devastations word as gospel in this regard.
I may start out the soon to be here Ground Squirrel season with a 200 round regimen between cleanings.
Long live the 17 HMR!

VG,,, You and I need to have one of those "rimfire" only varmint eradication outings!! The 17's, and the 581 and 541 with Stingers and whatever you bring!! SHOOT ALL DAY AND NEVER CLEAN THE BORE!!! Action may be needs cleaning but not the bore!! Darnedest thing I've ever seen!! GHD
