Hello. I am from NC and will be in KS on Nov. 2nd-15th. I’m riding to KS with my dad and his hunting buddies. We will be staying at a friends house in Lucas. They go to KS every year to pheasant and quail hunt, but my interest is predator and varmint hunting. I’m in need of renting a 4x4 pickup from the 4th or 5th until the 13th. I found one at a Ford dealership in Salina but $560 seems crazy for just nine days. I was hoping that someone around the Russell Co. area or other near by county, has a pickup they would be interested in renting (or if you know of someone who possibly has one to rent out). It could be any old beater so long as it’s reliable enough to drive around Russell Co. and from Lucas to Clay Center and from Lucas to Ulysses, and back to Lucas of course. I would be willing to pay a reasonable amount, so long as its less than $560 of course. Besides, I’d rather give my money to a farmer or such, who could probably use the money more than a business. The few guys I know around Lucas either can’t go with out their 4x4 or they just have a 2wd, which isn’t any good for the back roads in my opinion. Any help you could give a fellow predator hunter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I lived in KS from 1986 until 2000. I do not want to rain on your parade, but driving down a farm road and shooting at varmits is illegal. You also have to have permission of the land owner before you hunt/shoot on their property.Doing this during thr first week of pheasant and quail season would increase your chances of making a large donation to the state of KS. Good luck. Yackman

JIm Yackley. Maybe I’m just tired and took your post wrong BUT, I would like to ask= Where in my post did I say I would be “driving down a farm road and shooting at varmints I’ve been to KS several times. Hunting coyotes and shooting P.dogs. My Father and several of his friends have been bird hunting in KS every year since he was stationed at Fort Riley in 70 or 71. One of the buddies even bought a house in Lucas, I dunno….. 5 or so years ago. Where I go shoot P.D.’s I ask permission before I go. I plan on going on a two day paid hunt in the Western part of the state. It’s obvious you haven’t looked at a map lately at all the walk in hunting areas KS now has. You don’t have to have prior permission to hunt this. So long as some of the locals hasn’t torn down the WIHA signs (Oh wait, out of stater‘s probably get that blame, right?), it’s easy to find plenty of places to hunt. Your making it sound like I’m some dangerous idiot that’s driving around blasting out the truck windows, which frankly pisses me off. You seem to have the mindset like too many people do. Out of stater are dangerous……shoot at game and pay no attention to what’s behind it………. Out of stater shot my (fill in the blank) ________ shooting at a bird. BTW, I know many locals there that drive around the back roads and shoot predators. One prairie dog town is off a main highway and the locals will just pull over and shoot at them from the car/truck. Russell Co. KS population=County population in July 2007: 6,737 (59% urban, 41% rural) Rowan Co. NC population=County population in July 2007: 137,383 (59% urban, 41% rural) The population has gotten so dense around my area that one has to keep safety in mind at all times, especially while using a rifle. Before I hunt a new piece of property I will pull up an aerial map before I even step foot on the property, giving me an idea from the start where safe shooting lanes are located. Before you accuse someone of hunting in a dangerous/irresponsible/illegal manner, maybe you should get to know them first. B.H.
