Has the term "whistle pig" lost its meaning to todays youthful varminters? I can't say I've seen it used on this forum. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

I think the terms are geographical. My father has lived in the south for many years and when I said I saw a woodchuck he didn't know what I was talking about. He said he had always heard them called groundhogs. I live in MI and everyone calls them woodchucks. Don't quote me but I think "Whistle Pig" is more of a PA or NY term. Just my guess but who knows LOL!!! But to answer your question I am 30 years old and the only times I have heard Whistle Pig are in Varmint Hunter magazine and in a truck stop in PA. Also if you live in NY they need to get on the ball. I drive truck and was hauling a load of cream out to Walton NY last week. I saw 126 woodchucks from Buffalo to Walton. By far the most I have ever seen in one day. They were everywhere I looked!!!!!!!!!!!! I swear I saw 3 in one ditch and they were about 10 yards apart!!

Right on about Whistle Pig being a geographical term. I grew up in central Pennsylvania, and my Step Dad and I hunted them every Saturday in the summer. He called them Whistle Pigs, so I followed suit.

Now this is a little strange; as I grew up in Ohio and never heard the term till I moved to Colorado. It also has been stated that "Whistle pig" is used in the North west. It seems that it is used for ground hogs and rock chucks. Do both marmots whistle? roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward.
