Hey out there:
I have finally saved enough cookie jar money for doug shilen to build me a new medium range 3-5 hundred yard P/D rifle.I am in a quandry about which caliber 6mm or 240 weatherby mag ? Any suggestions or comments out there? This rifle has to buck 20 to 30 mph winds.I have a 22-250 for still to calm winds.

The Weatherby is going to be pretty badly over-bore capacity, i.e. inefficient like all Weatherbys. (Poor barrel life) I would go with a standard 6mm.........OR had you thought about a 25/06? Check that out. Very fast and flat.

You may also want to pick up the September issue of Gun World magazine and check out the article on the .224 TTH (Texas Trophy Hunter). Word is that the .224 TTH will soon be "canonized" by one of the majors, probably Remington.

What it is is a 6mm Remington necked down to .22 caliber and coupled with at 1:8 or a 1:9 twist barrel. This is to take advantage of the 75 and 80 grain .22 caliber bullets now being made.

Their test rifle got 3400 fps out of the 75 grain Hornady AMAX, and it shoots unbelievably flat.

Ask the Shilen folks about it...

Just a thought...

Why not stay with the 22-250. I have 3 but one is a fast twist 1/7" that groups under .240" at 200 yards 5 shots with 75 gr A-Max bullets. You already have everything else. Best this year was one shot-one kill at 592 meters. I get 3150 fps from 30.7gr of IMR 4064 powder. Lowpressue, little heat, and excellent accuracy. They will explode with this bullet. In fact I like this combo so much I ordered 3 additional barrels in case my barrel maker changes careers. BTW I use a Tasco World Class Plus 8-32X50 scope on this rig and it compares favorably to my other 22-250 that has a Bushnell 4200 6-24X40 scope.

Steve,

If you want a 6mm, look at the 6mm-'06 (a .240Wby without the belt and venturi shoulders) and the 6mm-.284 as well.

Otherwise, the .25-06 will do what you're asking with aplomb.

I built a 6/284 for the windy days but have gone to a 6mm Rem. One has a 1/12 twist and the other has a 1/14 and if it gets real bad I go to a 6mm Rem AI. The recoil isn't bad. Another would be a 243 or 243AI. Well good luck!Tom
