I am going to order a new Savage 12BVSS and am thinking about a 243 or 22-250. Can anyone tell me how the 1 in 9.25 twist will handle the smaller 55 60 or 70 gr bullets in the 243.

You'll be seriously spinning the 70's. Don't even try the 60's or 55's. I've got a .243 1 in 12 and I spin the 55's apart at 3950fps.

Like he said, with that twist, stay away from the light bullets. I've had the best luck with 75, 80 and 85 gr bullets in .243s with 1-10 or faster twists.

Garfield,

Not to dispute the other two gentlemen, as they are just reporting what they have seen.

I will do the same. I have a Rem 243 with a 1 in 9 and a 1/4 twist. This rifle gave me 2 to 3 inch groups at best no matter what went down the muzzle. I was one step short of winging it, when I tried a few loads on a hunch more than anything.

With a 60 grain Sierra HP, I was using H380. Most of my manuals list loads up to 46 grains. So I loaded 46 grains, same lousy groups, no pressure signs. 47 grains, same lousy groups, no pressure signs etc.

50 grains, of H380 5 shots, One hole at 100 yds. yet you could tell all 5 hit the same spot.

Repeat and same results.

got to be pressure problems, so do the old pressure test: reload same cases 5 times with the same loads, and check how easy or stiff the primer still goes in. ^6th time, just as stiff as first time.

Too good to be true, so chronograph it and see what kinda velocity she is giving: 4000 fps. plus, nothing under 4000, or over 4050.

When Noslers new manual came out I was vindicated from those who thought I was full of shit. It recommends 53 grains of H380 with a 55 grain BT for a 4,000 fps velocity.

Doing the "Rocky" dance, dadada dadada.

And then hear the old Hank Williams Jr song " Us country folks can survive"

And that's the way it was!! [Eek!] [Big Grin] [Cool]

I have an older Savage 110 in .243Win. It does very well with 70-85gr. bullets. It even shoots the 95gr. Nosler Bal.Tip well. If you put a 100gr bullet in that 1 in 10" it will go all to hell. I've also heard this from other shooters. Best wishes.

I shoot a factory Remington 788 for my coyotes, I use 55 gr. Nosler BT's, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I'm shooting a 1-10" twist, and the 55's shoot sub-MOA, this gun also averages sub-1/2 MOA with Berger 68 gr. bullets, my best with that bullet is .112, but the average is just under 1/2 MOA. This is my experience, although I purchased the first box thinking they would fly apart. BTW, the load is 53 gr. H380, around 4000fps
