Hi,

i friend of mine just bought a .22-250AI Menke rifle! McMillan stock, Shilen barrel, jewell trigger and some more goodies!
He likes to shoot crows and other Varmints with it!
He needs a bullets that fragments directly when bullet hits the target! What bullets are good for this task!

Thanks David

Any of the thin jacketed varmint bullets are designed to fragment quickly and easily. No guarantees though so watch your backstop.

The best luck that I've had is the Hornady 50 grain V Max pushed to full velocity.

Barnes varmint grenades pretty much vaporize on impact. They were designed for the military for this purpose. But as Rollins said be sure of backstop.

Depending on rate of twist....a 50 gr. TNT will run right on the vurge of coming apart in flight if launched from a 22-250AI.

Just another wuestion regarding the .22-250 AI, how is barrel life?? David My 22-250 AI with less then 600 rnds has throat erosion already. However it still put then under 1/2 MOA and at the speed of light also.I'f I had to do it over I'd buy another and another and another love it no regrets.

I'd go with the Barnes varmint grenades also. They are made out of a powder material to start with and blow up on a grape. I'm not sure how fast they can be pushed.

In Answer to your second question; your 22/250AI is approaching 220Swift especially if it is a fast twist. If you clean it regularly and carefully, avoid copper build-up and don't permit it to overheat you should have a long happy relationship. Fast rifles are like women, you must "cater" to them.

I have less then 600 rounds fired in my 22-250AI fast twist . Gun smith has recently ran a bore scope down it and said I have significant throat erosion.Current load I'm shooting is 80 gr Berger VLDs 39.2 grs of IMR 4007. Regardless of throat erosion rifle is shooting very well. I'll keep it clean and fire it slowly other that I don't give a ------

Actually, that is one of the bullets MOST likely to produce a ricochet.

The other bullets mentioned are all good candidates. At 22-250 AI velocities, two more that I will add to the list include the Remington 50 grain PLHP and the Speer 52 grain HP (NOT the match version).
