Fridays I usually finish work around noon and today was no exception the only difference was that the kids were spending the day at 6 Flags in Montreal, my wife had a happy hour with her work. Therefore I had a whole afternoon to myself. Of course I went out for groundhogs!

Well I shot this first hog at about 100 yards.

the shot was straight on and so I aimed for the chest. This is the entry wound there was no exit wound.

As I was setting up the picture I felt a lump on it's back. By the shape I could tell it was what was left of the bullet.

The lump was here

Well it's not often that you can retrieve a bullet from a varmint so I just had to cut it out

And here it is!

I then decided to do a little walkabout and spotted a nice sized hog in a corn field. The only wierd thing is that he was standing up on all fours just like a dog or a cat. Usually they hug the ground tight or they will sit up on their hind legs to get a better view of their surroundings. It was the first time I saw this type of posture. It was quite a ways out so I moved in a little closer. At about 250 yards I decided to take the shot before I would spook it. It was still standing there like before complete broadside.....

The shot went through the neck at the base of the skull. I put a piece of straw through to show the path it took.

All in all it was a great day I’m hoping to get out there again this weekend!

Good job.

Beautiful country up there. It's a 102 F (39C) today and the grass (what little there is) is brown and nothing's moving here.

Nice going!

Here in south central TX, it was 98 with high humidity. And we are in the midst of a drought.

Your locale looks nice and grren -- and COOL!

So what was the bullet/load you were shooting?

Thanks folks, yes I am blessed to live in what I believe to be some of the most beautiful country around. These hogs were taken about 10 minutes from my home. I have premission to hunt about 1000 acres of farmland all within 15 minutes from home, therefore I can get out hunting 2 to 3 times a week. Even if only for a few hours.

My rifle is a custom 243 win built around a Remington 600 action. I'm very lucky as it shoots cheap 80gr. Winchester Super X factory loads at .5 moa, at 300 yards it still manages to shoot sub moa. At 16$ a box I just don't need to handload for it. Big Grin

That's nice that you found a factory load for it most of mine have never had a factory load through them so I never know. Big Grin

I went out scouting some new areas of private land yesterday for ground squirrels and coyotes but it was 111 degrees F (44 C) so it didn't do any good to go at all.

Great posting!!!
That is what I call, Hog Heaven. Nothing finer in the summer than Chuck hunting.
Good shooting, and with a fine chambering in the 243.
Neat country you have up there.
