I'm looking for a bulk varmint bullet for a possible pdog shoot next year. I'ld like to stay around 50 grains with some exposiveness, yet hold together with the 1/9 twist.

I seen some hornady, midway dogtown, midsouth has some bulk bullets, etc. but looking to for a little field experience before buying. With the price of vmax and blitzkings going through the roof, I'm looking for cheaper alternatives.

beerMid South Varmint Nite mare or Varmint Nite Mare Extreme. In the 12bvss and three other rifles they deliver good repeatability. Winkroger

I second Roger's recommendation and add Hornady's 55 grain SPs... from Graf's they are currently $71.00 per thousand.. of course that will probably go up substantially on the next price increase..

Just to be clear, that is the hornday soft point with cannelure? How is the accuracy with that bullet and will it hold up to 22-250 velocity?

Getting some mixed info. Some say the hornady 55gr will not withstand 1/9 twist, yet the hornady tech said the 55's or ok, but not the 50's.

JB177- I've shot quite a bit of 52's out of my 1 n 9 twist Savage and they have done good. Here is a good chart to go by when wondering about bullet weights with rifle twists..

224 CF
- 8" for bullets heavier than 70gr.
- 9" for bullets up to 70gr.
- 12: for bullets up to 63gr.
- 14" for bullets up to 55gr.
- 15"* for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,100 pfs or more
- 16:* for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,300 fps or more

That is the Hornady bulk 55 grainer SP, with a cannelure..

It has held up just fine in my 22.250 with the one in 7 twist, at some decent velocity...

so It will handle a one in 14 twist common to the 22.250 just fine...

and it has proven very accurate in my rifles...

My own preference is 55 grainers in .223. I have used the Winchester bulk packed(cheaper bullet probably comparable to Remington core locs) in .22's and my grandson and I have taken deer with them. I also use this same Winchester bulk packed in .243 and my son in law, grandson and I have taken a truckload or two of deer with it. You'll frequently read that you need premium bullets in .22's or even .243, I disagree, on deer size animal pick your shot and your spot and have a sharp knife handy. For varmints,it's hard to beat cast bullets within a couple hundred yards. My .223 wont shoot cast bullets, but my 22-250 and .222's will shoot the RCBS 58 grain cast very well and it does a number on jackrabbits. This mold is a gas check version, but it does just as well without the gas check. Velocity is down around 2000-2200 fps but the mild report is needed when shooting jackrabbits from inside a pickup.
