Hi guys, I went out wed. AM to a small town that had not been bothered since last fall. The rats seemed to have forgot how the game was played. They were pretty dumb. I shot 80 rds in 1 1/2 hr.I had a streak of 15 in a row going 150-250yds. then I missed on a longer one. It was a ball. Also as a bonus I shot 5 Jacks, they were laying along the PD holes thinking they were hiding but they are WHITE and stuck out pretty good. They seem to turn inside out when hit by the 22-250. It was a great start to a new Rat season..P

Sounds like we may have one of those Bunny Abundance years? Seems to run in 5 to 7 year cycles. A little place outside of Winemucka, Fall River Valley, where they grow alfalfa. Just set up on a dirt road between the sage brush and alfalfa. We shot over 1000 bunnies from one location. Death was everywhere. Shots were from 10 feet to 200 yards, all at night. Been a lot of years though. We used to go on the back road from the valley, to a place called Gerlach. There isn't anything out there but dogs and bunnies. Sure was fun.

Went out two weekends ago myself and thought I woudl be in the middle of nowhere...NOT...some guys drove up right near me and were as surprised as I was. The town was very spooky but managed to get a few. Its so warm in Montana the rats think its spring!

Thanks a LOT for letting us non-western hunters know about that. You guys are REAL special.

Why don't ya' just tell us about the sun tan you got while you were out there. Why didn't you tell us about how you had to keep the beer on ice so it would stay nice and cold while you were shooting those "DUMB" rats. "Only shot a hundred rounds though" Rrrrrrrrrrrrr....... troll

Good grief!! I spent a half hour yesterday just plowing snow to get to my backstop to put up a target. Gotta keep the beer in your pocket so it doesn't freeze solid. Weekends are spent cutting and stacking wood to burn the following week. It was below zero every morning last week. bawling bawling

Yup, I sure am glad you guys are keeping us up to date on how things are going out there.... wave

Kim, you said it better than I could! Yeah the beer is a problem but a cooler keeps it drinkable and the sun screen has to be kept off the rifles but a guy can handle it..The biggest problem is keeping the guns cool enough so you can keep shooting, but if you alternate they can cool down a little..Its a tough life, but someone has to do it...P

Hey MT Al,
I used to live in Libby, MT. So I know what cold is all about, and I don't like it!! LOL.
Am going to be in your area in June. Going to shoot some in Miles City. I heard that the Malta/Zortman area was pretty much shot out, at least the BLM land. Any truth to the rumor?
When it gets cold here, I just stay inside!! The wife still has a job, so I check the weather as she is leaving for work. But if the Salmon are running, I just crank up the heat, and relax. We do what is called "Hog Lining". A bunch of boats will anchor up right next to each other, and then use the Afro Angling technique.

pipedoctor,

I'm not sure about the Zortman area being shot out, I've never shot up there. Most dog towns on BLM land are found out and shot to death in a hurry, doesn't take long for word to get out

Hearing the reports of dogs being out, I may have to take a drive a few hours south to near I-80 and get some shooting in.

Need to find out if the snow is gone near the interstate on the west end of the state.

I need to get a little practising with my 375H&H for Africa in a few months!

Up this way we are still up to our armpits in snow and my shooting is limited to at the range. I prefer shooting at rocks and dogs and things... covered up for some 4 months now...

I'm itching!!!
