Finally time to get a varmint rifle...

I'd like something reasonable that can be used on p-dogs as well as being lugged up into the hills after marmots, coyotes, etc. It will probably be used on sod poodles about 2 times a year, so I don't need a dedicated rifle.

Any thoughts?

Thanks very much

sporter weight model 700 in 22-250. If you want to hunt occassional deer make it .260 calibre. Quality 3x9x40 scope. If you use weaver mounts and rings, you can buy a 15x scope and mount it in its own set of rings and switch off to it when sage rat shooting. enjoy

A nice little .243 Winchester would make a great little "Switch-hitter" for you too!
Shoots 55 grain to 100+ grain bullets!

mtAl,

Hello. I might suggest a .243Win. or a 6mm Rem. They can be loaded up to take any deer you might flush up, and yet are quite good for smaller animals like woodchuck or coyotes. If you're going to be lugging it around stay away from the heavy barreled varmint rifles. The Remington 700 ADL or BDL is a good rifle for this although certainly not the only one. I would try to get one with a 22" barrel, then lighten the trigger for a decent pull. You may or may not have to glass bed the action. Shoot it first to see how it groups. If you don't reload it's okay because ammo is readily available for both calibers. Best wishes.

You can rebbl a CZ 527 carbine in 7.62 X 39 to 6 mm PPC. Mine weighs 6 lb unloaded with a Leopold compact 2 X 7 and is 40 inches long with a 20 inch bbl. I'll have another in 6.5 PPC in a few weeks. Sure handy little rifles.

I suggest either a cz 527 .223 accuarate and very light (I have one in a hornet) It can also be had in .222. Or a cz in 22/250 or .243 but they will be more like a more normal weighted sporting rifle.
