I am not trying to toot your horn, but I consider you to be an expert on the 223 Remington. I am a handicapped person so I have alot of time to read alot of posts on alot of forums. Your 223 knowledge is the best out there IMO.

I would like to ask you a question. If anyone else has tried this-please chime in.

Have you done any POI comparisons between sub sonic and normal varmint loads?? Out to 100 yards??

I am going to order a new Encore barrel(either MGM or EABCO) next week. I am also going to order my sound suppressor permit next week. I am considering a 1in8 twist, 16 inch heavy barrel. I am wanting to shoot as quitely as possible. The sub sonic load shouild be very quite, I am concened about the distance I can get with the sub sonic as related to a standard load?? I have also considered the 300 Whisper, but I do not think I can get reliable distance shooting from the Whisper.

IF you were going to build a 223 barrel-how would you do it?? Thank You, Tom.

Well I don't know if I am worth of your praises, but thanks for the sentiment.. even if Roger is jealous... lol

Getting a trajectory out to 100 yds or meters is not a problem...

in fact subsonic 300 Whispers will make it out there to 100 yds... I am aware of an acquaintence here in Oregon who uses one on a rebarreled Stevens 200..

What size of game are you shooting at?

For something coyote size, 100 yd subsonic load is easily do'able...

shooting ground hogs at 100 yds, if that presents itself might be a little more challenging...

keep in mind tho, that a lot of blackpowder MVs back in the 1880s and 1890s wasn't much more than 1000 to 1200 fps...

recoil is none existent...at thsoe velocities...

Trail Boss would definitely be my first choice of powder, regardless of chambering picked...

if you can give me a little more input, I can also consult with Mike Bellm, as he is a good friend here in town and he messes with those Encores all the time...

Noveske here also plays with silencers and moderators alot...on 223s in AR platforms but I can discuss your applicational desires with him also....

But heck an 22 Long rifle is good to 100 yds, and all you are doing is getting that MV in a little larger package is all...

The other question is bullets.. jacketed or cast?

Personally, I think you are building a fun toy, especially for popping varmints out the house window... or the occasional neigbhors pesky cat...

If I go with a 1in8 twist I would go with the 75 grain A-Max. If I go with a 1in10 I would go with the 50 grain V-Max. I am open to bullet choice.

A major concern is same POI at 100 yards with a sub sonic load, and a regular load. It has been my experience that a short fat barrel will print differnt loads at the same POI at 100 yards. But I have not dealt with sub sonic loads in 223 before. I do shoot alot of gallery loads in my 45-70. But I cast a roundball for those loads, and my accuracy is good out to 50 yards.

I am open to bullets(especially sub sonic), a major concer with the sub sonic load would be expansion. I also do not have any problem with casting my own bullets-I cast alot of bullet's now.

The rifle will be used for ground hog's.

I am familiar with Mr. Bellm. As a matter of fact he is the one who did my trigger. And he did a super job on the trigger. I have bought several other things from him also. He would know me as Tom Chase.

I am considering the 300 Whisper, but I can not seem to find any trajectory data out to 300 yards. And I have been doing alot of reading on the subject.

I am sorry Roger-I did not mean anything personal. I am just admitting that I learned alot from some of Seafire's previous 223 posts. Thank you for your reply. Tom.
