Just got back from my 1st prarie poodle hunt in SD. Didn't shoot as much as I thought....nowhere near the 500 round a day mark. But it was a great learning experience! I never shot so far in such strong wind before! Heavier wt bullets were the right thing to have! Also learned trying to spot a dog with a spotter...so your both looking at the same animal proved quite a task! Especially with the barren surroundings.

We did take a few dogs @ 100 yds and less ...but most were 250 and out. The grass was high so that made things a bit harder.

Lessons learned.....

1. If possible put a comp on the rifle so you can spot your own hits.

2. Have a range finder.....what I thought for sure was 1000yd shots....the Lie detector (range finder) kept my head from swelling.

3. Make sure you bring a big enough hat to keep the sun at bay.

4. Rattle Snakes! We don't see to many in PA....but walking through the field to verify a kill and Prarie Rattler got between me and my buddy...we were about 3 feet apart.....he jumped almost over the top on my head.....then me....his! Luckley we had a 22 pistol and killed the damn thing!.....I guess the funny part was after we killed it we were real leary...I was carring and extra box of 22 in my pocket....when I jumped a little gully and heard those shells rattle in my pocket.......well almost need new underwear! Wink

We had a grat time and pricing was real reasonable....and the locals were great.....hopfully again next year!

Shoot me a PM also!
We'll all load up and go.
I heard they got alot of rain lately, makes the grass grow(which is good) but makes the dogs hard to spot(which is bad)
Yeah, the wind can be tricky!
Glad you had a good time!!!!!
