I am working up some loads for a 223 Remington(Encore Barrel-MGM). My bullet choice is a 40 Grain V-Max. I am considering a starting load of 25.0 grains of RL-7. Does this sound like a good starter load to you guys?? I realize there are a lot of good powders for the 223. However I have an extra 10# of RL-7 just laying around. It is my go to powder for my 45-70's, so I bought a bunch of it. Thanks, Tom. WEST BY GOD VIRGINIA | ||

I've burned a lot of powders in 223s, and RL 7 is one of my favorite... I'd start out with 24 grains of it...especially in an Encore.. with 40 grainers, I have run it as high as 28 grains in Winchester and Remington brass, with no problems ( work up etc)... Federal Brass only will stand 26 grains of it, before it pops primers.. Fed primers also allow less volume as max, if you use them... Lake City brass seems equal to Win and Rem brass... WCC brass is equal to Federal Brass as far as max volume.. in a 26 inch barrel, 28 grains of RL 7 with a Win Small Rifle primer, will hit 4000 fps..
