Please help with any info on VLD chambered rifles for varmint hunting. I plan to have a rifle chambered in one of the 6mm caliburs for long range varmint shooting from a bench. This will not be a carry gun and I want to shoot heavier bullets than the 50 & 55 gr ones I currently shoot in my 223 & 22-250. The gunsmith asked if I wanted to shoot VLD's? I couldn't answer his question because I have no experience with VLD's. Please advise if a VLD chambered rifle would be good for this project or if I should stay with the standard varmint type bullets. All advise will be appreciated.

Question 1: What are you calling long range, and what varmints you are hunting. My definition of long range is past 600 yards and varmints to size of coyotes. If this is the range, and varmints you are talking then you need a high B.C. bullet and that is the VLD type of bullet. In 6mm. the 107 Sierra MK or the 105 Hornaday are good VLD type of bullets. Beger, JLK, and several others make them as well. If you are going to shoot the VLD type of bullets in a 6mm, have one built with an 1 in 8 twist barrel to properly stabilize it at long range. Having said that a 223 or the 22-250 with a fast twist barrel shooting a 70 gr. JLK, a 75 gr. AMax or the 80 gr. Sierra are good long range varmint cartridges. May I be half the man my grandson thinks I am.....RiverRat
