A couple of weeks ago, I posted a topic about how I was hunting coyotes off my living room sofa. I got a dead horse in my yard and the coyotes and wolves have been coming to visit. Originally I had planned on taking the horse to a (somewhat)remote lake for bait. In no time I had coyotes and wolves on the horse right in my yard. (Never at the same time.coyotes and wolves) In about 10 days I shot 5 coyotes and a black wolf. Then things got quiet for about a week. On Sunday morning, I glanced out the window and I noticed, what I thought was the neighber's dog, having a bite on the horse. I looked again about 15 min. later and then I realized it was a wolf, quite similar in color to the neighber's dog. I was in the process of getting the video camera set up and the wolf decides to leave before I could get a shot with the 222.( My girls started scrap'n and screaming about then. Most likely why the wolf buggered off.) This morning there was a coyote on the horse. It was still dark, but I could make him out in the scope, so I shot him. To dark to video . A little later when it was daylight, I spotted anouther coyote on the horse. I got the camera roll'n first and then shot him too. I figured I should get dressed and go out and pick up the yotes. Just before going outside, I checked, and anouther coyote on the horse. Not 15 minutes from the last one. Got the camera roll'n and droped that one as well. What suprised the hell out of me, is that the coyotes continued to come to the horse with dead coyotes laying right beside it. Is that not unusual? I took a couple of photo's of the 3 coyotes where they fell beside each other. So I am thinking what a great way to start a day. I decide I should get some work done, so I burn the old chicken coupe and an old building down. I had one hell of a fire going. When I was sure the blaze wasn't going to start a forest fire, I went back into the house to have lunch. I was not in the house long and I looked out the window to check on, what was left of the burning buildings and I imediately spotted a large grey wolf on the horse. I could hardley believe it, and I was there. I got the video camera going and shot the wolf with the 222. It is not the same wolf that was here the day before. Not 5 minutes later, a friend pulls up in the driveway. If he would have been any sooner, the wolf would have took off before I could have gotten a shot. I hope this horseshoe don't fall out of my ass any time soon with the luck I've had today. Very unusual, I must say. I told my wife that I am going to get up tonight and maybe get anouther wolf. She says," You shoot and wake up the girls and you are gonna be in alot of shit!) I decided against staying up, otherwise my luck will have run out. I don't understand these coyotes or wolves. They are mature and in great condition. Mice and deer are at thier peek. Rabbits are so/so. The far side of the horse is 98 yards from the house. I have shot all, but one, during the day. Very unusual. Daryl

WOW! Free food... who's goin to pass that up! My brother got his scope BIT by one he shot today! Got his Taurus 17 HMR out to finnish him off, the dog spun around and grabbed the muzzle, scope and all in his mouth, crushing the Aimpoints sunshade as he dropped the hammer! Wild... You need to set you a motion sensor up near the horse and wire it up to your alarm clock. Get your bow and sneak out at night.

Yukoner: Good job up there! I am so jealous! I have bought Wolf tags 3 times in my life (SE Alaska two different years and Alberta once) but have brought no Wolves to bag as yet! I DREAM of killing a Wolf someday! The ultimate Varmint in my mind. I have had many close up oppurtunities at Wolves here in Montana but they are protected. The Wolf packs though are now creating havoc with the Elk populations in certain areas. And they have exploded population wise so fast and so far past the established population goals that maybe next year Montana will offer Wolf tags. I keep going to the public meetings put on by the Game and Parks people here (mostly to identify the tree huggers) in regards to the control of the Wolves. Where do you prefer to aim you 222 bullet on a Wolf? Broadside lung shot or somewhere else? Kudos to you again on the convenient "set up" and good shooting! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Brent, Using my bow is a good idea. I have a flatbed truck about 20 yards from the horse. I could make a blind on top of it with hay bales. Good thing the yote bit your brothers scope and not something more important. Varmintguy, Wolves are pretty cagey, they can be difficult to get. There are lots of wolves in the area I work in. Out of 25 or so hunters per fall, we only kill 3-4 wolves total. I am shooting 50gr. Ballistic Tips at 2,850 fps. They are too light for wolves. I have been sucsessfull, only because I can wait for a perfect shot. The first wolf I hit the top of the heart. He made about 5 giant leaps and covered 50yards before pileing up. The second wolf, I shot in the chest, dead on facing me. At the shot the wolf droped and never moved. I got this on video. I found with this load, if I shoot for center lungs, the coyotes run 100-150yds. If I shoot them facing me or top of the heart, they drop on the spot. The 50gr. BT's make only a pin hole going in and do not exit. Perfect for a pelt hunter. I am going to load up some 55gr. soft points and try them out. After I kill a few more varmints, I am going to drag the horse farther out to about 250yds. Then I will use my 7 STW. It is unfortunate you are not a Canadian citizen, otherwise I could let you shoot some in the Yukon. It would be great if they open a season in Montana. Those wolves need to be educated. Daryl

Yukoner, Nice work! Is there much property like yours available around Whse. You are basically living my dream. Seems silly to many but at least those on this forum can relate! Ian

Ian, I am living my dream as well. Sometimes I have to stop myself and appreciate and enjoy what I have. I can relate, I am origionally from Saskatchewan. Sold my house, and everything that would not fit in a small trailer. Daughter, wife and myself lived in a motel till I found a job and an appartment to live in. Property around whitehorse is not easy to get. It is also very exspensive compared to some other places. My wife and I looked for several years. We got lucky and met a fellow who hated realestate agents. Made a private deal. Realestate found out and were all over it. They were worse than the coyotes on the dead horse. Whitehorse area is a nice place to live. Excellent hunting nearby. If you are interested, I know a good realistate agent and a couple of places (just outside whitehorse) that can be rented.
