I have finally had time to get my "killing chair" dusted off after a couple of years.

The last 3 weeks 25 jackal bit the dust.

The Killing Chair, Fox Pro Spitfire and 22K Hornet combination worked like magic.

Here are a few photos of last Saturday's session.

Jackal Female

She weighed 18lbs and I would guess she was about 4 to 5 years old.

Next stand this jackal male came in

He weighed 17lbs and would judge him about 2 years old.

On my last stand I called a pair out from in between cattle.

Quick shooting ensured a nice double

The male on the right weighed in at a whopping 25lbs !!! They dont often get that big.

Would guess he is about 5 to 6 years old

The female weighed in at 17lbs and was two years.

As always its a lot of fun to spend time under African Stars

Are they less cautious than our Foxes and Coyotes? or just less educated?

They are every bit as cautious as Coyotes.

I am the only person allowed to call in that specific area.

I try not to educate them. Wink

Most of the time they do not get a chance to get educated as the 45gr SP does a great job.

Hallo Bob,

Its been a long time

I used a combination of prey (rabbit) and jackal vocalization.

I love hunting(shooting?) jackal. I've taken 15 so far.

Many of my successful outing have been memorable, but you mention of "jackal vocalization" reminds me of my favorite kill.

I was on a jackal killing role. My PH said that he had never had a hunter kill more than three jackal and entering the second week of my hunt I had already killed six. I had begun to feel in-tune with these little Namibian song-dogs. My PH was begining to tease me about having jackal magic. Somewhere deep down I was begining to believe it myself.

I was sitting in a high seat when a jackal came in with that jinking-jog that makes them so hard to hit. He stopped suddenly and I pulled the trigger just as he broke back into his trot. I missed him clean and he took off like his tail was on fire. He was 120 yards out and I knew I would never hit him on the run. I got the rifle moving and a sound suddenly came from deep inside me "WHAA-WHAA-WHAA". He stopped and looked right into my scope. Even through the recoil I could see the bullet smack him to the ground.

My PH shook his shook his head incredulously. In his German/Namibian accent that emphises every vowel to its fullest he said, "WHAA-WHAA-WHAA. Shit man, now you're even speaking jackal!"

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.
