Anyone here have any experience with this cartridge? I have an unfounded dislike for the .223 and would like to think this round might beat it...

I have been shooting 222Mag for over 20 years and have a great fondness for this caliber! I also shot the 6x47 which is this case necked up to 6mm. It is a super accurate round and was used in BR competitions at one time in history. It has a little advantage over the 223 in velocity and probably would have been chosen as the military round over the 223 but the neck length and shoulder didn't work as well as the 223 in the semi-autos or autos that the military needed. Loaded with all the VARGET you can get in the case behind a 40 grain BT, (30grains)it is very deadly on varmints!! I have one that has a 40X barrel on a 700 action in a 40X stock that will do in the .2's at 100 yards anytime with anyone shooting it and will do in the .3's at 200 yards with Fowler 52 grain Match bullets ahead of 26.2 grains of BENCHMARK or 26.5 grains of IMR 3031. Easy to load for and not real picky!! It's not a 22-250 by any means in terms of velocity but the accuracy and mild report makes it a pleasant 400 yard varmint rifle. If you would like one let me know! This one can be had. GHD [ 03-21-2003, 06:23: Message edited by: groundhog devastation ]

I have a 222 mag, velocity and accuracy are the same as the 223's I have had. I really like the design of the cartridge in preference to the 223. Regards, Charlie.

I have a .222, .223, and .222 Magnum, all in virtually identical Sakos. In terms of practical field usage, they are almost indistinguishable. The velocity advantage of the .222 Magnum over the .223 is less than the difference seen in individual barrels -- perhaps 30 to 50 fps on average. (I might add, that loaded to .223 pressures, the original .222 is not that far behind, either.) The .222 Magnum is an excellent cartridge, has essentially identical accuracy potential to the other cartridges sharing this basic case, and will give you just a tad more velocity. If I found one for sale at the right price, I'd buy it.
