Chuckmusher and myself got in one last hunt on Thursday afternoon. Since CM had alreqdy gotten to 240 and had surpassed his personal best total for a year, he gave me the first 3 shots to get me to 100 for the year. The day had a bad start with rain where we were going to hunt. But we waited it out. First up was a "standing up like a Dunkard preacher" hog at 230 yards. The 17 Fireball did the honors on that one. Next to go was a basketball size chuck at 393 yards with wind being a factor. The Ruger 22-250 sent him his airmail invitation home. Number 100 for the year showed up and was dispatched very efficiently with the Ruger 22-250. Then it was CM's turn to shoot. He proceeded to use my Fireball("the Furbie" as he calls it) to smack 2 at 150 yards. Both were out at the same time with one holding on to the base of a tree and the other peeking. The tree hog was blown off the tree and the other eased down out of sight but came back up 10 minutes later and stopped a 25 grain VMAX with the side of his head! Then CM got out his 22-250 and proceeded to make 3, 400 yard plus shots plus 1 more with the Furbie. I got 6 more with the parting shot being a 414 yard shot with the 6mm bringing my total to 106 for the year. CM is at 246 groundhogs for the year. A great season with some extremely enjoyable hunts. Thanks to the members here who posted the pictures of the other hunts for me this year. I cleaned the varminters and put them away and yesterday got out the "big varmint" rifles and shot them a bit. The ST/FL 260 shot a .400" group with last years deer load so I guess I won't change that one. The Sendero 25-06 shot a 1", 300 yard group........maybe I should take it varminting! And the 375 H&H shot 1.2" at 100 yards and made me remember why I like the the varmint chamberings so well! Hope you all didn't get bored reading. Charlie (GHD)

So gd, one question,

The "standing up like a drunkard preacher"...

Was that describing the ground hog, or the shooter?

jumping

Congrats on a successful year!

Congrats on a successful year!

Slim, GHD, as you know, has quite a colorful manner of speaking. That was a Dunkard preacher, not drunkard preacher, and it refers to the chuck and not to the shooter! The Dunkards are an Amish-like religious sect in these parts. We appreciate your interest in our little adventures!
