Interested in this gun.

Would you guys get a fast twist 22-250 or the 243? I would probably run 75g A-max in the 250 and 105 A-max in the 243. I think the 243 would be slightly slower out of the gates but the 105gr bullet has a better BC than the 75, or even the 80 A-max, which Im not sure would stabilize anyway. I think the 243 would be fine with 105s, they suggest a 9 twist on the box but .25 difference really isnt much. Anyone have experience shooting 105's out of a 9.25 twist 243?

Opinions appreciated!

Great rifle. I would get the fast twist .22-250. I'm looking at one right now in the Savage LRPV right bolt-left port.

Is a 9.25 twist in 243 enough to stabilize 105 a-max's way out past 500 yards? Anyone have experience with this?

Two problems with the .22 cal, not much energy left at long range and wind drift, havnt tried the new longer .22 bullets tho... 600 yards should be ok with 243and long bullets and 1- 9 1/4, no guarantees.., They are no exansion target bullets, So youl not be getting any colateral damage, and they could skip and make them a problem if you dont know exactly what is beyond where you are shooting. I personally wont use the hard target bullets for long range prairie type shooting. ...I hit a coyote years ago in the knee with a 25 -06 with a sierra holow point and it blew its intestines out.. Your velocity should be over the speed of sound at target range. Strange terrain can make a miss with just scope height/cant error alone, usually theres nothing level out there to go by.. you can get a decent group by using a tree or something for cant repeatablilty, but if the target is going 30 miles an hour after the first shot things get mighty tough.. My 6mm rem at 1000 yards has 1188fps, with twist rate of 1 9 its fine with 87 grain vmax. it has a bc of .400 and 3000 fps muzzle velocity.. ..A long range target shooter said you want to get the majic number of 3000 muzel velocity for accuracy at long range, didnt ask why.. wind drift is sometimes 8 feet for me where i shoot 1000 yards... so any gun is not much for unknown wind at unknown distances, ... the people who are the best, that is US military snipers, can read wind and have equipment for yardage to be able to get one shot hits, and the spotter has many years experience doing just that.. Ive found that the wind can be blowing three different directions as you move down range.. ..Im not an expert, youl probably have to make your own road in this endevor as its hard to find someone with the same inerest, and places to shoot.... Shoot what your gun likes, not what you decide it should shoot is my best advice and concentrate on hitting the closer ones and youl do fine.. dave

My 12fv shoots 105 gr. a-max's very well with 45 gr of H-1000. I've got a great picture of my dad with a 3 shot 3.75 inch group he shot at 700 yards. I'll post it if somebody will tell me how.

I just built the exact rifle you are talking about. I built a 22-250 wih a 28" 1in8 Krieger barrel. The 22 caliber 75 grain bullet has a better BC than the 75 grain 243 bullets. And IMO any bullet over 75 grains is just to big for varmints. The 243 bullet in a 100 grain bullet is a good choice, but it is just too much rifle for ground hogs. Even the 75 grain A-Max in a 22-250 at velocities over 3300 fps has some recoil when you shoot all day long. Tom.

Tom, I thought I was the only owner of a lefty, fast-twist 22-250!.

Mine's actually a target rig with a 1-7.5" twist Pac-Nor on it. Shoots even the 90 VLD's really, really well. I use 80 Sierras and 75 A-Max's from the magazine for 200/300 rapids.

WAY cool to see Savage offering something close right out of the box!
